There was a presenter on my local station who died suddenly a few years ago and the outpouring of shock and upset it brought out was quite amazing. Some stations, especially the more rural ones are a part of the community, in the above case it wasn't just listeners who were paying their tributes, it was all those who had met the presenter from local politicians to charities and organisations they'd featured, interviewed or been personally involved in.
It's not just something that happens in local radio, look at Tony Morris and Diane Oxbury, they both had whole half hour news bulletins devoted to them
