In my opinion we can't really dub something 'just a media story' if we'd be up in arms if another network or organisation had done the same. The whole point of journalism is that it truthfully holds people to account - if trust in the methods of doing that is lost then it is very serious.
It's arguably even worse considering it's a publicly funded organisation. There's no obligation to buy a newspaper, or have a subscription to Sky for instance, but with the BBC you are pretty much obliged to pay for it through a licence. The holier-than-thou BBC should be setting an example to others, in my view.
