Lewis Goodall Leaves BBC To Join Global
#1
Another loss for BBC News.  Lewis Goodall is following Emily Maitlis and Jon Sopel to join Global from September.

Lewis will work on Jon and Emily's daily podcast and as Analysis & Investigations Editor for the Global network, with a focus on video journalism.

Global have an interesting strategy of getting quality journalists while making their website news very tabloidy with plenty of headlines designed solely to get clicks rather than report news in a BBC/Sky manner.

Can the last one to leave Newsnight turn the lights out in 54D please?

This is one jump I did not see coming. Lewis is probably one of the BBC's best -= I truly thought he'd shoot through the ranks. Probably the biggest loss of talent yet.

That is a huge loss. Have Global won the lottery or something - surely podcasts are somewhat of a loss leader.

I am sure they may end up on the radio shows at some point, but podcasts are very popular, and since Apple introduced the concept of paid subscriptions, and Global have been pushing for their Global Player and signing up - I think they are planning to monetise further and are staffing up with big names, for future content plans.

I can't say that I'm surprised by this news. Global have the resources to compete with the BBC on salaries, and also I'd imagine that it's more exciting for established journalists like Gooddall, Maitliss, Sopel and Marr to have the flexibility and relative editorial independence at Global that the BBC can't offer because of their impartiality. Global seems to allow their journalists and broadcasters to have much more freedom to express their opinions or to give analysis with a certain political stance, like with James O'Brien being a centrist Remain liberal whereas Iain Dale and Nick Ferrari lean more Conservative.

Global have always seen themselves as the commercial alternative to BBC radio. Their investment in BBC talent isn't new either as Eddie Mair who is leaving LBC this summer had made the transfer from PM on Radio 4 to drive on the radio station seemless.

How long before they offer Marianna Spring a gig over there? She's the latest journalist who is capable of providing audio as well as visual content in an accessible manner and has those PSB values for Generation Z.

I wouldn't be surprised if Ros Atkins' recent promotion was fending off an attempted poaching, Global certainly are going for pretty much all of the BBC's best and brightest.

I do wonder, though, how much the recent escalation in departures is down to a bigger push from Global and how much is to do with a real underlying and growing unsatisfaction at the BBC. Global has made attempts at poaching in the past, but the prestige and/or platform of the BBC has sometimes been enough to prevent defections. I can't believe that Global have simply gone from trying to tempt a high-profile BBC name every few years to developing a sizeable stable of ex-BBC talent over a few months.

There are numerous factors in play here with Global acquiring high profile talent.

The most obvious one is pay and the publishing of high earning talent fees. If you can earn more at a commercial broadcaster without having your salary or show fee published and given more freedom, then it's an incentive to leave.

LBC under Global in the last 11 years has become a challenger brand to Radio 4 and 5 Live, their election coverage for example was on a par with BBC radio coverage, while LBC News has become a credible alternative to rolling news tv coverage.

Global also clearly understand where the future is for credible news and that is to invest heavily in talent, production and video content. it's become more than just an exercise in attracting political figures to the workings of the company. The website may be tabloid in nature, but that doesn't mean what comes out of the speaker is though. LBC Radio Ltd became revenue earning in 2020/21, so is less reliant on their music brands which will eventually lose listeners, especially to their younger focused brands which will see losses to music streaming providers, so speech is key to the future of their broadcasting business.

The website being more of a tabloid or click-baity nature is no surprise though, as it’ll be about ad revenue per impression and sadly those types of sites do attract an audience.

I’ve never really understood the issue around publishing the pay. I’d be happy for it to be out there if I earnt an amazing amount of money - it’s still in my bank account at the end of the day!  Big Grin

But this must be a worrying time inside BBC (News especially I guess) as they are losing the best.

It was once the purview of agents to negotiate deals with others head hunting, in order to get better pay or to preserve the value of their client.  Now that the pay scales are known, it allows rivals to swoop in and offer higher salaries, and takes that negotiating edge away.  It can also lead to unrest where co-workers know how much is paid to who.

One thing Global's deep pockets show is there was absolutely no justification to wave through the destruction of local commercial radio at their request.

It enabled the smallest of their portfolio to survive the downturn of the late 00s/early 10s. Global were well ahead of networking stations by the time Bauer started snapping up small scale local stations to expand their Greatest Hits Radio network just before the pandemic and then had to rush launch a load of stations into it.

Local radio will grow on SSDAB, but I think that's a separate topic for Metropol.

I’m sure they will have saved the equivalent of several lottery jackpots thanks to the way their money gets put through Jersey and the British Virgin Islands, thereby avoiding all that pesky tax nonsense.
