ITV Public service announcements
#1
I first came across Public service announcements on Scottish, in the mid 80s. Called "Box 2000", later "Action 2000/1/2", they were 30 second to one minute spots, for charity or little organisations, to appeal for funds, volunteers, or to join or offer a service. To my knowledge, Action 2002, as it was known by then, ended on STV in 2002. I remember the original Box 2000 titles, it was a blurred photo of lots of people, and the Box 2000 logo, in rounded block letters, zoomed into view. Yet, as to this day, I can't find it!

What I'm keen to know is, what other regions called theirs. Tyne Tees was PSA, later community link. Anglia was Anglia Action, and I think LWT was CSU. And, when did these spots end on the various regions? Lastly, did anyone make use of the organisations featured, or even join any?

LWT's was later called LWT Action.

I vaguely remember Thames Help, but that might have been more of a consumer affairs type of programme.

Granada had Granada Community News for a while in the mid 1990s, before it changed to Granada Action by about 1998/99. The Granada Action branding and sponsorship didn’t change throughout the time it was on air and survived into the ITV plc era. These were never scheduled on the guides, but they always appeared at around 12:30pm and just before 6:00pm.

Central had 'Community Service Announcements', styled as 'CSA', as seen here in 1992 (52 secs in)...

CSA in Yorkshire too - this example clearly styled after the Calendar titles of the era

UTV held onto Community Service Announcements longer than other regions; certainly as late as 2008.

Any mentions of LWT's 'LCU' and TVS's "PO Box 13" yet?

Granada had Careline which was latterly operated with the BBC and what is now Bauer Radio. They would quite often run their captions at the bottom of films on ITV over Christmas to show this. I’m not sure when was the last year they did it, but it certainly ran into the ITV plc era.

And of course you could get in touch by writing to Action 2000, Box 2000, Glasgow.

Did they usually follow the lunchtime Scotland Today?

Help, later Thames Help I think was just a few minutes long and on just before Thames News (or maybe just after). I think it was a mix of community and consumer affairs.

At one point it had a 30 minute prime time spin off called the Thames Help Roadhouse, which I think was an early TV job for Punt and Dennis.
