I genuinely want to like the new branding, and I think it looks pretty decent on the TV channels’ presentation, but the more I see it elsewhere, the more I think it looks cheap, garish, unsophisticated and basic - especially when it’s just the logo, text and a solid, plain, coloured background. A lot of it has an air of ‘my first mock’ (one star) about it.
To be fair so did the one it replaced - it looked so simple and underdesigned compared to the familiar slanted logo of the 90s.

What really is holding this one back though is how now seven months the old logo is still fighting it for attention.  This is why not rebranding all of the core public facing elements on one relaunch day is such a mistake.

I never felt this way about the 1997 branding though, which I thought looked clean, classy and elegant right from its launch.

I think the problem is whilst Reith Sans works well as a functional typeface on screen for text (better than Gill in that respect), but for logos, I just think it looks rather unrefined and clunky.
Completely accept your opinion, but I don't agree with you – I've loved almost everything I've seen of the latest branding.
iOS BBC Weather app has been Chameleoned.

That apparently be case here. Additionally, new BBC logo has placed in top centre on app layout, similar to TV promos.
Only BBC Bitesize that not yet change its icon.

I'd disagree as well. Reith is definitely not clunky. Reith is quite elegant as well. There was a multitude of reasons why the BBC chose to develop their own font. One is cost-saving, another is finding the right balance between lifestyle, elegant, and importance, and putting it in a visual sense. It's hard to find something to like about one font... if there's EVERYTHING you liked about a previous one. Gill indeed was ahead of its time, and this font was chosen to replace Gill because... it's what it is- inspired by Gill. So the font should also be elegant and ahead of its time. I do indeed feel that Reith is the perfect successor to Gill because it is timeless, as well as, most importantly, EXPANSIVE. The serif variant of Reith would make perfect use for more serious endeavors. Combined with the recent rebrand, and I could pretty much see why I like Reith, and to those who didn't, we should give it some time to expand.

Is it a sun? Is it rain? They both apply to weather anyways.

(and yes, i know it's supposed to be a sun)

ad astra, TVLF
Probably symbolises them forecasting sun but it actually raining.

A friend of mine says the most annoying part about all this is that "the BBC is spending way more having two different logos at the same time"

Take that as you will.

The app's layout hasn't changed at all. They just swapped out a Gill Sans BBC Weather logo for a Reith one that just says BBC.
