Product Placement on Show Titles
#1
In Waitrose today one of their shelf edge labels said "Part of the At Home With Waitrose recipe" and then the ITV and STV logos, and I can't remember a programme called this (unless it's upcoming).

I know Supermarket Sweep was "brought to you by Tesco" and heavily featured the Tesco store layout and products, and M&S have had some sponsorship on a programme, but do the supermarkets (or products) fund the programme themselves or do the broadcasters pitch it to a company?

The product in question by the way in Waitrose was a loaf of sourdough bread.

They had an ITV magazine in Waitrose a while ago,

Supermarket Sweep was furnished at one point by Asda as well in the Winton years, even though it wasn't product placement and was just a "thanks" in the credits.

Of course in the States the original show came from an actual supermarket in the 1960s, and it was only the revival in the 1990s that saw it being a studio based supermarket (and a global format).

I think in the Winton era it rotated between supermarket chains each series to avoid undue prominence issues.

Was filmed in a unit in a Sainsburys car park and they went into the shop to buy a mystery ingredient if I remember

The first series of Millionaire I recall had very prominent sponsorship from The S*n involved.

I remember a few in the 90s...

Surprise Suprise and This Morning had a pretitle roll which merged into the theme tune from BT, Talking Telephone Numbers was The Sun and I think the Ben Shephard era of the Krypton Factor was Sage?

The last time I watched The Travel Show on BBC World News, the titles has a Turkish Airlines jet flying around. You don't see this on the BBC News Channel version of the show.
"From today you'll hear some new voices when you're watching UTV, as for the time being we're handing over to our colleagues at ITV, but rest assured Julian and I will be back with you as soon as possible"

The early 90s examples was just how sponsorship was often done as part of the title sequence itself. The Word and The ITV Chart Show are another couple of examples.

Later sponsorship was made more seperate in part because it made the sponsorship bumpers distinct from the programmes and in part so the sponsor could be changed or removed altogether if needed.

The Krypton Factor (like a couple of the other examples already mentioned in this thread) was funded by the sponsor so was aloud the feature more prominently in the title sequence itself.

New C4 show The Great British House Transformation is seemingly an advertiser funded show by IKEA but the branding is really low key with just the logo underneath the logo. Less prominent than a sponsorship bumper and not even trips to IKEA or IKEA deliveries blatantly featured throughout.
