As tornadoes swept across the South. All the lead meteorologists on air at the all the major locals stations in the Nashville tv market were women. So awesome to see. Usually they are in a secondary role or maybe one station has a Lead Meteorologist is female. Nashville is unique.

WAAY-31 a station covering Northern Alabama set up their own three radar network of sorts using the the type of radars that sit on the back of the NBC Storm Rangers. They’re very versatile because they’re small enough to avoid during major modifications - two appear to be on water towers and another is on a three story building. Apparently despite being in tornado alley there are several gaps in the NWS network.
WCAU the Comcast corporate flagship in Philadelphia was supposed to get a new radar, it had its license WRER223 granted in November 2019 but the station cancelled it on December 2020. They’ve been using the WNBC Storm Tracker 4 radar which is based in Rutgers University and according to maps is 75 miles to Philadelphia. The WNBC radar has a supposed 300 mile reach, so I assume the higher ups didn’t want to spend the several million dollars building this out. NBCU still has the six Storm Ranger mobile radar units, the one for WNBC-WCAU-WRC is parked in WCAU’s lot.

I hope that is works the way they want it to. Tornado alley has shifted east to Dixie Alley. Rather than tornado outbreaks occuring on the empty plains of Oklahoma and Kansas this is now concentrated in the more populated and forested Deep South. So the more "Eyes" the better. In addition to the Radars, many many stations now have camera networks so. if the know a tornado is in particular area or heading in a particular direction they can swing the camera around and capture it live. Many of these camera sites include mini weather stations the capture the live temperature, wind, rainfall, humidity, etc. I hope that this new system of radars saves many lives.

I’m glad to see this topic on the new forum.
I’m addicted now. Check the convective outlook every day at the NOAA website, look at tornadohq.com - livestormchasing.com and I’ve studied hook echoes for far too long. One annoying issue is the amount of stations who haven’t made their websites EU-compatible? Not that they are under obligation to, obviously.

Time to get a VPN to watch tornado coverage.
 Its interesting to see how climate change has shifted weather patterns in such a significant way. Its a distinct different from the massive outbreaks that occurred on the plains for all of living memory to now where the most deadliest outbreaks now occur across the South. So now you see the tv stations across this region fortifying their weather teams and now you see massive infrastructure such as this radar network being built by WAAY in Huntsville. Keep in mind Huntsville is not a massive market by any means. Its on tract to surpass Birmingham as the largest city in the Alabama in a the coming years. But recently the states of MS AL GA have been hammered by several tornado outbreaks.

Indeed, it's been an eye-opener for me to see that more areas than I thought had such severe outbreaks of storms.

Moments ago WTVA - Tupelo, Mississippi was knocked off the air multiple times as they covered a Tornado Emergency for the city of Tupelo,MS (The Birthplace of Elvis Presley). A Tornado Emergency is a special official declaration by the National Weather service when a Tornado is on the ground doing damage in highly populated city. There are different from a Tornado Warning and a Tornado Watch.
Apparently the birthplace of Elvis may have been damaged. The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for most of the State of Oklahoma, the heart of Tornado Alley. To see the stellar live rolling local coverage keep an eye on the Oklahoma City tv stations live coverage if/when tornado warnings are issued later today. The stations in this city are known for the teams of live storm chasers that fan out across the state broadcasting live pictures back to the station, as well as flying their helicopters and chasing the tornadoes from the air. Particularly is they are in the Oklahoma City Metro. Live on air storm detecting and dissection and clear explanations are their claim to fame as well as having some of the largest meteorological teams in the tv business. Streaming Now. Hopefully the stations arent geoblocked. The first TORNADO WARNING of the day is just been issued. It begins.
The major Oklahoma City stations are now streaming LIVE COVERAGE as tornadoes/severe thunderstorms begin to breakout across Northern Oklahoma. Remember this area currently officially under a tornado WATCH. A watch means that a tornado could form at any time. Then a Tornado WARNING is issued if its indicated on radar or spotted on the ground. If it heads into the Oklahoma City metro or built up area then a Tornado EMERGENCY is issued when there is currently catastrophic damage is occurring and loss of life. Watching this live coverage rivals anything you can expect from a extremely fast paced election night coverage sans autocue. Imagine multiple live streams coming in, whilst at the same time realising that the information you are giving is saving peoples lives or your watch a deadly natural disaster unfolding live on television. As predicted they all have teams of storm spotters in chaser vehicles. WOOD-TV Grand Rapids, Michigan debuted their new weather center. This is a rare beast of a weather centre, especially for a small market like Grand Rapids. The set looks way better than the sets used for national operations, Weather Nation and AccuWeather. I like it better than the Fox Weather set. Apparently they will used it also for traffic coverage. But its Grand Rapids....cant be that much traffic. It seems they will be using some PTZ cameras. And likely when they are in extended rolling coverage the main studio cameras will be rolled into this narrow space. For regular newscasts they have the small CSO space off to the right of the main Tracking Centre, I do think they made good use of a narrow space and its not over done. its quite simple design overall.
But size of the market doesnt necessarily mean that a weather centre of this size isnt an asset or a point of different. All you have to do is look at the tornado coverage by the small stations in the MidSouth the past few days. A tornado outbreak continues across the South of US, right now Jackson MS is currently under threat. If you have never watch live un-scripted rolling continuous coverage. WLBT 2 Jackson is doing a stellar job keeping ontop of the number tornado warning thats are dropping down. Not sure if its geoblocked.
