ITV News Changes from March

ITV should be careful to give up 7pm so readily.
We've see before what happens when they give up long established slots. EE if it did move to 7pm may well improve in that slot with an audience used to soap being on at that time.

I'd expect that ITV are banking on that happening - indeed, I'd have thought that most people who watch EE also watch Emmerdale and Corrie. ITV do need to be mindful though that they don't do something that loses them the 7pm slot - they saw the difficulty when they moved News at Ten first time round.

It's a bit of risk that ITV are playing if it is true. I do wonder why they have thought about doing this? Then again, if it means one less soap slot to worry about, then I would say it's a good move. We'll see what happens.

I could see them moving Emmerdale to 7.30pm daily with 1 hour on a Thursday and Corrie to be shown Mon, Wed and Friday for 1 hour at 8pm. This would only leave the 8pm hour on Tuesday and 8.30pm on Thursday to fill with non soap formats during the 7.30pm-9pm period.
Id like to think they could reduce the soaps to 5 episodes each - keep it simple with half hour each between 7.30pm-8.30pm. But I know they wont do that unfortunately.

If the extra 30 minutes is going to be absolutely straight news, I can see this being a real disaster, if it’s true. Who wants to sit through 90 minutes of news a night (120 if you watch NaT as well)?
The only way I can see it working is if the extra half an hour is a different format somehow. Maybe some sort of Morning Joe style discussion panel with Paul Brand, Peston, etc - three editors/correspondents discussing the days events with Mary, maybe with a couple of regional highlights. With a news summary halfway through, you could probably stretch it to half an hour. Like others, I wonder if they’ll use the soft set corner for part of this extra 30 minutes - I think, but might be wrong, that there is space for that in the corner without having to move the ITV London desk? Unless they permanently change the ITV London set up, which could then double for the extra 30 mins?

While it's good that ITV are committed to primetime news, I can't imagine anything more likely to turn off Emmerdale viewers and send them to The One Show than that kind of thing. Of course, the teatime news moved to 6.30 initially so ITV could still have half an hour of news in the official definition of primetime, 6-10.30. If this does happen they'll have an hour and a half!

An hour of news is doable, see Channel 4 News, 5 News etc as well as in places like Australia but it has to be formatted right.

I’m in agreement to be honest, I’m not convinced that there’s demand for either 30 extra minutes of straight news (and what do you actually fill the time with?), or a slightly softer, news based format. ‘Tonight’ is usually around or slightly under 2 million viewers I believe, so unless it was a different format in some way that proves popular I can’t see the extra 30 minutes doing any better than that.

Sounds like an awful idea, more about cutting the cost of filler programmes between 7.30-9 than improving the news content. The Evening News has everything you need in a little over 20 minutes - if it was about the news content extending News at Ten to an hour, Inc regional news, would very better.

If this happens and Corrie moves out of the 7.30pm slot it will be the first time in over 60 years that Corrie hasn't aired on Mon and Wed at 7.30pm on a regular basis and also over 30 years on a Friday at 7.30pm. Also Emmerdale has been a fixture in the 7pm slot for over 30 years and been shown daily since it went 5 times a week in 2000. It would be a massive change.
The soaps aren't the big ratings pullers they once were so its a good thing they are trying other things out and shaking up the schedule a bit.

P.S. Wonder if that random 45 minute episode which we put down to aligning the schedule with the Bake Off final was kind of a pilot for filling more time. Guess there is a good chance of a new look being introduced with any changes too.
I think moving the bulletin to 5.30pm and The Chase to 6.30pm would make more sense than this, but require them to 100% commit to News at Ten to meet the primetime commitment.
