Interestingly in Australia they’re running with sports rights too, having acquired rights to domestic football and some internationals - obviously tieing in with the Channel Ten association. Now football wouldn’t be the draw in Australia that it is this side of the world (at least the fourth most popular sport after AFL, rugby league and cricket) but it’s an interesting strategy nonetheless. I don’t expect them to replicate it here though, the sports rights market is a bit more crowded than it is in Australia where until Stan came along Fox Sports dominated the pay tv side.

This is a personal quip - Paramount+ hasn't updated their website here in the 'States, and it's been driving me nuts ever since they renamed.

After a backlash over delaying the international airings of Star Trek Discovery until Paramount+ launched following the withdrawal of the show from Netflix ViacomCBS are now opting to show it internationally via Pluto TV in territories where Paramount+ is yet to launch.

I had to resort to watching it on Pluto the other day as my pal who'd been torrenting it had forgotten to throw it into the dropbox folder. What a bizarre concept for a service. Basically a series of linear channels but with no catchup associated (the on-demand services are completely separate), US style ad break timings (eg before the credits), and no ability to pause live TV. So despite having my fancy pants Virgin TiVo service I have to be ready to watch it at precisely 9pm on a Friday like it's the 90s.

I wouldn't even say the 90s, most of us had VCRs back then so could still have recorded it if we weren't around, more like the (early) 80s!

On the topic of VCRs, I found a box of tapes when I was moving in to my new house. It was tapes from our VCR we had back in the 90s. I discovered that 99% of those tapes were The Simpsons on Sky One or something from Cartoon Network!

The Cartoon Network stuff might be interesting to see! The Simpsons probably less so with how often it gets repeated (though any continuity and adverts could still be interesting).

Star Trek is unique in that they needed somewhere to put it last minute on a service they owned in multiple territories and Pluto was all they had and that's just how the service operates. And I can imagine they also want to make it less convenient for people to watch in the hope they might eventually subscribe to Paramount+ when it launches. But evidently Pluto isn't normally going to air 'appointment to view' style shows.

They were all long since obsolete anyway due to DVD.

Still no hard date for the U.K./Ireland launch, other than by end of Q2.

Launching 22nd June in U.K. and Ireland, £6.99 pm sterling (so probably €7.99, I guess) and included with Sky Cinema satellite subs. Seems there’ll be some sort of annual option too.
