The letters in the logo are two thirds of the size they are now and will disappear into nothingness if not enlarged substantially.

Even with the current logo package, it doesn't really look like the master logo has been prioritised.
I agree , because I know that most people in my area mostly watch the BBC channels for sport

I also quite like this, but really that has nothing to do with the new logo itself. You could easily switch out the logo in that animation for the old one and the overall animation would remain the same. That's not a criticism really, it just rather demonstrates what's already been discussed about this new logo relying on strong design work and presentation around it to make it work. Standing alone as a still image it still looks like an inferior knockoff of the current logo.

Perhaps it could reduce to a variant that's just the 3 blocks, no letterforms for limited, secondary use cases below a defined size?

(yes, I know the W1A skit, don't @ me).

Attempted to replace the 1997 logo with the new one, both in the BBC Sport logo and in the BBC One logo and... yeah. I'd argue the BBC should just strip down the letters and have only the blocks, since a viewer will likely always connotate 3 blocks as the BBC. If you were watching this on say, a phone screen or a small preview, the BBC letters will literally be lost, not that they already are considering the logo was built for a fargone era.
Also known as "Allanbuzzy" on other places.

They'll probably enlarge the blocks on the BBC Sport package. I can see cases like that MOTD slide not even having the blocks with the channel name, they're using one and TWO on their own already in some places.

As controversial as it might be BBC Studios won a D&AD award last year for its BBC Select branding. So it looks like this is definitely sticking around... https://www.dandad.org/awards/profession...bc-select/

It would be appreciated if we could refrain from posting mocks in this thread please. Don't want things like this turning up on Google and have people think they're the real thing... Smile
That's actually happened with that BBC Two design, the version he originally posted with the colours inverted and the Gill Sans blocks. The Sun actually used it in their Christmas TV preview last year. Clearly Googled the logo and found it on the blue place.

Just heard about these logo rumours, and can only agree it's a waste of money. Yes, the press will always moan, and they did back in 1997, but at least then there were valid reasons for change. Why is there not enough space between each block? Why do the letters need to be smaller, especially in this day and age of mobile devices?

The 1997 logo still looks like it came out yesterday and I don't think it should be thrown away just because it's old. Especially as other BBC services are clearly struggling from a lack of money. Maybe I'll get used to it, but it's sad to see the old logo go, and without wishing to sound melodramatic, it does feel like two fingers to Lambie-Nairn.

An interesting, if morbid, thought though. The 1997 logo was launched in the autumn after the death of Princess Diana. This new logo is apparently launching in the autumn after the death of Prince Philip. So well done, BBC, for setting up a very good pattern there.

Back from my ticking off for speaking my mind on the GB News editorial content.

I had hoped this BBC Logo was an aberration. Of course we are not seeing it in its fully formed usage across multiple channels and genre strands, so I don't discount the fact they may be able to make it work well and feel fresh.

There has to have been thought put into how this logo would work on mobile devices and websites. The spacing between the blocks being increased is likely to be an affordance for small sizes. But it does feel less polished than the current 1997 logo, and as I did back on TV Forum - using the new font, and increasing spacing, need not result in as awkward a looking logo.

Then there will be time. I am sure many balked at the 1997 logo replacing the coloured slanted 1991 logo. Once implemented and as remnants of the old logo are replaced, the familiarity that we have with the logo will colour our views.

As for the cost, I will leave that argument to the anti-BBC lobby and BBC hating Newspaper outlets to bemoan and get all agitated with.

Channel Rebrandings and building signage does require some cost and replacement over time, and I am sure the BBC will not be in a rush to replace every physical version of it in one go.

Your version is definitely far better - and has the advantage (or perhaps disadvantage to the designer!) that to the untrained eye it looks indistinguishable, so it's not like they need to rush around replacing all instances of the logo straight away

I definitely agree your version of the Reith logo is great! As others have said it's practically indistinguishable but I'm guessing that is the very problem. My guess is the BBC wanted it to look somewhat different to what they have now to justify the change.

Surely they would've tried doing what we've all said here and indeed what you have done before going with the new blocks in the way they've created them.

But you hit the nail on the head here - surely that’s the disadvantage of that mock and exactly why they haven’t just done a like for like replacement with Reith? For all the negatives in the new design, by making it obviously different to what’s gone before they’re ensuring the new version will need to be used consistently and making it easier to spot and correct any incorrect uses of the old/incorrect logo.

I agree the mock looks nicer, but it really becomes the definition of a pointless rebrand (and a “waste of money”) if it’s that similar.

Well, the people who are paid to care about such things will immediately spot it, but you won't end up with years of such an obvious dual identity. I suppose here on a TV pres forum that would be blasphemy but in the real world...

e.g. you still see "Network Rail" from time to time, even though they also tweaked their logo to "NetworkRail". It doesn't matter if you see one version or another, they're close enough, and they can slowly bring the new logo in as vehicles, equipment, signs all need replacement.

Isn't the whole point of Reith to reduce costs in licensing Gill Sans - so it's hardly pointless, whether it looks obviously different (albeit naff) or not.
Quote:BBC:
“We are simply using our own font – which we own the intellectual rights to – to tidy up the blocks when we update content or BBC products.

It would be wrong to suggest that the costs of the design of the blocks was significant.”

It looks like this is the official stance on the new BBC logo. Definitely created in-house to save costs in the long term with a font they own. And 'tidy up' is how they're justifying the design of the updated blocks which also suggests a phased update starting from this Autumn.

But only 2 years ago when BBC News was reithed, the BBC denied that the same thing would happen to the logo, because it's trademarked and the letters BBC inside of the logo are considered shapes instead of text, so the so called ''font licensing'' does not even apply to the logo itself! As I said before does this mean that the Beeb has kept paying for ''font licensing''for 2 more years after reith was introduced? If this is the case then why wait 2 full years to reithise the logo. This makes no sense!
