Lisa Shaw: BBC Radio Newcastle presenter dies aged 44

BBC Radio Newcastle's Lisa Shaw has died in hospital after a short illness.

The 44-year-old joined the station in 2016 as a daytime presenter, broadcasting every weekday.

She previously had a successful career in commercial radio in the north-east of England which included stints at Metro Radio and Heart.

Without being disrespectful, I've just been listening to Radio Newcastle and the whole station seems to be in a state of mourning, playing melancholy music over and over with presenters sounding audibly upset while soldering on, as if there's been a major royal death. While I sympathise, perhaps people who didn't know her or listen to her programme might be put off by this?

I suspect the station staff will not care. They have lost someone who was part of the station and regulars may understand I hope.

I do not blame them at all. They've lost a clearly loved member of their team. When Radio Derby lost Colin Bloomfield to cancer, they presented a special programme in his memory

And it seems that two BBC Local Radio stations are in mourning today, as within the last two hours, the death has been announced of BBC Radio Derby presenter Tony Lyman.

The audience do have a strong affinity to local radio presenters, especially those who have been at the station for a while and/or presented a daily show (I don't know the history's of the two presenters above). There was a presenter on my local station who died suddenly a few years ago and the outpouring of shock and upset it brought out was quite amazing. Some stations, especially the more rural ones are a part of the community, in the above case it wasn't just listeners who were paying their tributes, it was all those who had met the presenter from local politicians to charities and organisations they'd featured, interviewed or been personally involved in.

It's not just something that happens in local radio, look at Tony Morris and Diane Oxbury, they both had whole half hour news bulletins devoted to them

Radio 2 went into a similar mode when Terry Wogan died. I live 300 miles from Newcastle, and know nothing about Lisa, but I gather from reading up today, she was a popular and well known figure in the north east? . I'm sure what the station is doing today is appropriate and fitting.

Just read the Radio Today article and she'd been at the station since 2016 most recently doing one a daytime show. Before that she was a breakfast presenter on a commercial station in Newcastle for years.

Her whole career was spent in radio in the North east, that's not something you manage without being well known and liked.

They did but only for his timeslot as he wasn't at the BBC for long, he only joined to do TV programmes around the Open in Portrush in 2019 and then was on the 10.30am-12pm show from September 2019-January 2020 but his former station Q Radio who he worked for around 10 years in it's various guises did go into obituary mode for 2 days playing slow music, reading out tweets and memories.

I was shocked when he died and listened to him for many years and was also the voice at Northern Ireland Football Matches and the Belfast Giants so I felt Q Radio & BBC were right to do this.

Awful news, heartbreaking. I think in fairness to BBC Newcastle just about anyone who’s listened to radio in the North East will know/heard of Lisa Shaw. She was on Bauer’s Metro Radio going back about 20 years now then spent years doing various shifts on Century FM & Real Radio; including Breakfast on both incarnations iirc. Then did a spell at Heart when Real turned into Heart up here and most recently was a prominent voice on BBC Newcastle. A County Durham lass gone too soon (with a young son too) who lived and breathed the North East and had time for listeners and colleagues alike. RIP.
