All BBC main sites have dual fibre (microwave in a few cases) feeds and a third route by satellite .
This is also used as the alternative feed by some relays as Which have less than reliable Rebroadcast links RBL
But it carries sort if vanilla services ..so only one BBC England feed

Our hotel had ITVs 2-4, CITV and Be, E4 and FilmFour as well, so must have been using something other than that satellite.

To be honest, which ever version of BBC 1 chosen, it's going to be wrong for the majority of transmitters using it for back up.
On the BBC Fault Status webpage via their postcode checker, if a transmitter is tagged as 'Wrong Region' then that's an indication they are on 27.5W back up

I am now going to say an extremely controversial opinion.......maybe they are not getting these additional channels from satellite......maybe they are getting them from IPTVs or stuff like that

Read my earlier post; Astra 28E UK beams can be received in the Canaries, but you need a very large dish

There is the Tyne Tees version of the D3/4 mux being carried on 28.2E, it's there to feed Bilsdale's relays since the fire in August, it won't be there forever, but possible it's being used by the hotel

And there's a lot of huge satellite dishes out there.
Just noticed this morning that the feeds for ITV , E4 , Channel 4 etc are gone from my FTA box

I think @gallunach is referring to the PSB2 satellite transmission on 28.2E that is being used to feed Bilsdale's relays. It's just moved to another transponder, and one that has a Europe wide beam, so the stream is now encrypted (and not with VideoGuard)

That’s why it’s using tandberg director I don’t think my average box can handle that :-(

The Satellite Dishes in Greece that the bars use to get British channels (mostly for sport) are huge. Last year I watched Poland v England in a bar and it was ITV’s coverage.

I am/was referring to the former feed for Bilsdale
I didn't mention it by name because I thought it was obvious given this thread is for Bilsdale
I’ve not tried but reports are Apparahtly it’s the video that’s encrypted but not the audio so we are not exactly missing much but of course no chance for people overseas.
