Out of all the result announcement presentations during the night, to me, this is the one that stands out.

Watched this live and I felt the tension

"Good evening. Dull, grey, cold, miserable - and that's just me. The weather hasn't been great, either."

And the ratings are in... TF1 was the undisputed leader of the night with 28,2% (5.6 million viewers), peaking at 10.4 million viewers during the reveal of Macron as winner, nearly doubling its share in that moment; however, the overall share is lower compared to the first round. In the opposite, France 2 manage to slightly increase its share to 21% (4.9 million viewers), peaking at 8.5 million on the exit poll reveal. Big day too for M6 and BFM TV, third and fourth overall (the latter leading in the news channel fold), with 8,7% (1.6 million) and 5,4% (around 1.5 million viewers) respectively, with BFM TV peaking at 5.7% share (no data on M6's peak score). M6's coverage was, even with the shortened timeframe, the most improved in respect to 2017, given they are now sharing many news and political resources with RTL. In contrast, France 3's poor effort (once again) caused it to only have a bad 5% share (1.23 million viewers).

Back into the news channel fold, LCI surprisingly beat CNEWS' talking heads-led evening, with LCI gaining 2.2% and CNEWS 2.1%. The right-wing channel, however, managed to beat LCI during the exit poll revealing, with a 3% vs 1.9% share. franceinfo was, unsurprisingly, low-rated, only managing a mere 1.1% of share and no peak during the exit poll.

France 2's reveal of the result reminded me of Sky News in 2019...

Here is an INA retrospective on how France 2 (and its predecessors) have covered the second round results since 1965

The 1.1% share for Franceinfo isn't surprising because it appears it got zero promotion on the France Télévisions outlets except Franceinfo as they didn't want to lose share to France 2's main show.

It seemed the attitude was that we'll put out an election special and if anyone finds us, then that's fine by us.

I'd like to hope that France 3 will have more airtime dedicated to the legislative elections.

While I agree that TF1's exit poll reveal did look very elegant and tense, I thought France 2 handled the first few minutes afterwards very well. A few words on the actual result, then handing the mic to the cheering crowd made it feel like a more national moment, who ever you supported. It just worked televisually in that setting, in a dramatic location with thousands of people.
