Time to bring back phone in quiz TV channels - in the toned down way
#1
Challenge TV was there first with the phone in quiz TV concept though Prize Time. And the first gambling channels were Avago, the pre-all porn Friendly TV and Nation277/217.

By 2005 the phone in quiz TV and gaming market was taking off and mainstream broadcasters like ITV and Channel 4 moved into the quiz TV market.

The problem with phone in quiz TV shows and channels is there were a waste of time because they were a rip off and it was rigged because of the bad games and the system that weed out the entries that most viewers made. Not to mention it killed proper late night TV.

After the 0800-gate in 2007, phone in quiz TV market imploded and the other gaming channel market was growing. The channels in the gambling section on Sky plummeted and the only left was SuperCasino.

Why did the renaming gambling channel on Sky collapsed?

So you're saying they were a rip off but lets bring them back anyway?

IIRC Ofcom received a complaint about one of these games and the methodology to solve the damn thing was provided to them (the complaint was published in a Broadcast Bulletin but how they reached 2,591 or whatever it was wasn't included) and they didn't see an issue with that, so there was obviously something most people were missing.

Wasn't the big scandal over premium rate competitions and polls the thing that saw off most of these shows/channels?

But yes, bring back Prize Time.
Write that down in your copybook now

Channels like itv play died because of the phone inn scandal in 2007. All though I think channel 5 did quiz call for sometime afterwards. I would like to see them return they were good viewing. It was also good for getting new talent on mainstream TV some of the presenters went on to good things afterwards 2 names spring to mind kirsty Duffy who co presented the wright stuff and kat shoob who went on to do the comircial radio chart show

Why should we get back to a dated concept?

Not a quiz based show bit linked to phone numbers and a gameshow ? talking telephone numbers was a good fun show 7pm Monday nights mixing mini challenges and celebrity focus this would still work as a main Saturday night show ?

Stephen Mulhern has already tried that.

Did it flop in ratings??
Thought that kind of entertainment would work better than say current line up with the void etc
Maybe try again with philp and Holly as hosts early evening show etc

Okay, given that the lessons have been leant long enough from the 0800-gate, It is about time that the phone in quiz shows/channels should make a comeback without the rip off and fair 50:50 skill and luck focus. Quizmania could be brought back on the own channel with Greg Scott.

If it was 50:50 skill and luck, what would the prize be? £2?

Well if it was a ratings smash it would have had at least two, maybe three series. The fact it only had one, well, probably suggests it wasn't a ratings smash.

Anyway this suggests "It's a slight mystery why so few people are [were] watching [Magic Numbers], until we see what's on the other side. Tonight's the Night with John Barrowman, a show so mind-numbingly simple and cheesy that it makes Totally Saturday look inventive"

God no. These were annoying bar one which was Quizmania which was the only one which didn’t have obscure and misleading puzzles.

And delivered a show which was as much about entertaining those watching as bringing in the revenue, something many other shows and channels really did not get.

A couple of years ago it did look like the genre was making a return of sorts via apps with the likes of HQ Trivia, but ultimately they could not monetise it (unsurprisingly considering it was free to play) and they soon disappeared.
