Plans for BBC One HD - CCFG - 30-03-2022 They've done Sky Glass. They've done Virgin. Surely the next easiest/cheapest option is the online streams on iPlayer? Surely the next easiest/cheapest option is the online streams on iPlayer? I think the iPlayer streams are still fed from DSAT. Incidentally BBC Parliament HD is now on Virgin, like the BBC One regions which are distributed directly to Virgin. Whereas they presumably pass Virgin and Sky good old baseband SDI streams (straight off the back of a DA), for them to encode, the iplayer streams are encoded 'in house' and so fall under the BBC's capex budget for this (the world's longest) project ! Plans for BBC One HD - Jimbo2022 - 14-04-2022 BBC1 London EPG now be running ok n S IT DV6945 on 10.847V but to h in s still points BBC to BBC1 HD main channel. 6945 has a on w as yes been there but not sure if what it's on purpose was. BBC2 NI HD EPG data appeared last week on 12.236H but only for 24 hours and was not activated. Anyone know what us actually going on and us there a timescale yet? Thanks. I dont think it helps Leeds tbh even if it was HD its so dark that studio and the floor is full of scratches and that background which hasnt changed in 10 years. RE: Plans for BBC One HD - Orry Verducci - 19-04-2022 (13-04-2022, 10:01 AM)Markymark Wrote:Inspector Sands post_id=78486 time= user_id=1003 Wrote:My understanding is that the encoders for iplayer are fed in the same way as the encoders for terrestrial and satellite. That's very likely the case. Virgin and Sky (in the case of Sky Glass) are responsible for the encoding on their platforms, so they would have been the ones who took on the cost of switching to HD. In the case of Sky Glass they had the advantage of setting up a new platform at the same time the BBC were planning to switch, so they were able to start out in HD. In the case of satellite (Sky/Freesat) and Freeview as the BBC use their own infrastructure it's up to the BBC to fund costs themselves, so the timescales will be different. It's also worth mentioning that they need to purchase a lot of infrastructure (i.e. many encoders) to make this happen, and with the chip shortages and shipping delays the lead times on broadcast gear is a lot longer than any of us would like at the moment. I'm refitting a facility at the moment and the lead times I'm being given have gone from the usual couple of weeks to 3-6 months. No doubt the BBC will have been hit with this too. RE: Plans for BBC One HD - Jimbo2022 - 05-06-2022 The tests on 12236H have been on green screen since last weekend. Thus despite BBC2 NI being in hd on SID 1200 fir two weeks from 10 May Does anyone know what exactly is going on? When should we expect BBC2 NI in hd on Sky? This continual messing around is making the UK broadcast infrastructure a laughing stock when the rest of Europe has hd as standard and we get crappy 576x544 or576x720 pictures. Not good enough in 2022! RE: Plans for BBC One HD - Orry Verducci - 05-06-2022 (05-06-2022, 09:23 PM)Jimbo2022 Wrote: This continual messing around is making the UK broadcast infrastructure a laughing stock when the rest of Europe has hd as standard and we get crappy 576x544 or576x720 pictures. I'm not sure that's a fair assessment. The public service broadcasters in Europe that have regional variations have very similar cost and bandwidth challenges to us, and as such many of them still broadcast their regional variations in SD with non-regional versions in HD, much like the BBC services here. Off the top of my head I know that the regional versions (on satellite) of France 3, Rai 3 in Italy and WDR in Germany are all broadcast in SD. As for BBC Two NI HD, it's important to remember that it's the first BBC channel being carried on a Sky operated transponder, not one of the BBC's own, so the infrastructure to encode and distribute the channel is different to the other services. The link between the BBC and Sky has clearly gone down, but that's ok as the channel is still testing and they're likely still figuring things out. It's possible they tried out one distribution method, hit some issues with it, and are in the process of changing it. Just give them chance, it's better they take their time and get it right rather than rush launching a service and having it fail much more publicly later. RE: Plans for BBC One HD - telebox2001 - 05-06-2022 I always thought Virgin took their BBC feeds from DTT. When did that change? Ok I see your point. Fair enough and I am sorry. Yes I was aware if France 3 regions were SD SD Nd sane with the others you mentioned. Once it is done it will be a positive. Maybe you are right with BBC2 NI. When it was actually running the picture quality was very good indeed. What was very strange was that it went off as soon as it around the same time 1199 was switched on - using the same stream as SUD 1200. There is something strange on 10.847V on SID 6997. NO video or audio but a BBC service there maybe to come? RE: Plans for BBC One HD - Brekkie - 06-06-2022 Worth noting even if regions on satellite for France 3 on SD their entire DTT platform was switched to HD some years ago. They basically closed the SD platform and relaunched it the next day as an HD only platform, with channels having to bid for new slots on it. Yes, they are way ahead of us, (and remember they didn't have any DTT before 2005) RE: Plans for BBC One HD - Jimbo2022 - 06-06-2022 A much faster switch in France. On fransat everything is hd I think. DTT in UK started before France but ferryside which was dtt only first was 2007. So we are way behind. Even Ireland is HD for main channels but they don't have regional variations. |
