The BIG Breakfast - Whataday - 07-04-2022

PD post_id=77752 time= user_id=1887 Wrote:Cheers! That sums it all up nicely. I wonder how their shortlived BBC One Saturday night show came about if things were already pretty frosty

Passport to Paradise gets a brief mention, just to say that it had a team of writers and everything was so tightly scripted. She felt it would have worked better if they'd been more off the cuff like in the BB days.

I don't think they were very frosty then, just not as close as before. They still remained professional. It wasn't really until Denise joined the Capital Breakfast Show when Johnny didn't really want her there, that things crumbled. They are on better terms now though.

Not too much, it's all pretty brief. She mentions Garry Bushell's campaign to get her in the house, and that she was brought in to cover Sharron for two weeks while she was on holiday but she never came back.

Didn't she get an on-screen farewell though - very brief but I'm sure it was announced on air it was her last show in the last few minutes of the show.

The BIG Breakfast - Fanoftv - 10-04-2022

As I look through the schedule this morning, I had the realisation that Sunday Brunch (after celebrating their 10th birthday the other week) has not only been on air for longer (more years, not episodes) than The Big Breakfast but has also kept the same presenters throughout. Yet it doesn’t feel like it’s been on for as long as The Big Breakfast was on for, but why is this?
Because it’s a comparison of a daily vs weekly broadcast, due to the amount of times that BB relaunched itself, the many changes in presenters over the years, the impact it made in a short time or that I was a child and unfortunately time seems to go quicker these days.

Other things to consider:
• Good Morning Britain is 8 years old in a few weeks and still has the main four presenters (and most additionals) from launch working on the programme in some capacity.
• Holly & Phil have been presenting This Morning together for 12 1/2 years.
• Live & Kicking only managed 8 years.

EDIT:
• It’s also 10 years today of BBC Breakfast from Salford. It just doesn’t make sense that they have broadcast from there longer than The Big Breakfast was on air.

The BIG Breakfast - Brekkie - 10-04-2022

I think generally speaking presenters seem to stick around much longer now, perhaps having learned from those who previously moved on from a hit after 2-3 years and basically seen their career go downhill from that point forward.

Also feels like there are less opportunities within the traditional TV environment at least to break through with new shows. C4 for example used to have presented shows in the 6pm hour, in primetime, in late night, at the weekend, but now outside of factual formats and the odd quiz show I can only think of The Last Leg (a decade old), The Lateish Show and that TV show that was on last year in terms of presenter led TV shows (rather than formats). So it's probably one new format a year compared to previously around one a month, and that's the same across all channels too.

I'd forgot Barbara Windsor did a week on Down Your Doorstep.

Some footage of the Bigger Breakfast here from 1998 and the clock on The Bigger Breakfast seems slightly out of position:

It had to accomodate 10:00 onwards, hence the narrower font. Nice to see a clip with the yellow fly-in titles too - they're not as easy to find as the version with the brick house facade.

RE: The BIG Breakfast - Fanoftv - 03-05-2022

A great find! Was this summer 1998?
Josie was always fantastic on the Bigger Breakfast (along with everything that she’s done imo), and over the holidays following the Bigger Breakfast became a much bigger show in it’s own right, especially when they had their own set on the landing. Her partnership with Dermot especially worked well.

RE: The BIG Breakfast - Brekkie - 03-05-2022

Two more observations from that clip.  Firstly the "Take it Easy" break flash just before 4:30 - don't remember those at all and wasn't the slogan of the time "Life starts at Seven". I vaguely remember a break flash for those with the slogan appearing on flowers.

Secondly The Bigger Breakfast titles have a different ending to the main show, using the ending from the mid-1997 titles.

Looks like the house has finally been sold:

Chris interviewing Denise on TFI Friday which I'd guess was Christmas 1997, talking about Vanessa not being sacked and returning in January (though I don't think she ever did).

(NOTE: 90s early evening TV hasn't aged well - you wouldn't get chat about Santa like this on The One Show! BB chat starts a couple of minutes in.)

And Zig and Zag in 1996.

The BB does Dallas with Dallas inspired themed opening titles. I don't recall ever seeing this before, maybe because i had to be out of the house and in to the classroom by a certain time.

RE: The BIG Breakfast - Brekkie - 25-05-2022

Just a random thing they'd do from time to time. Something more unusual in that is a voiced sports report within the news bulletin - I don't remember anything other than Phil (or the newsreader of the time) voicing all VTs within the bulletin.

Have no memory of the "Spud you Look a Like" competition either.

And is that Stefan Raab as the German Eurovision guest?

It is indeed Stefan Raab. And could explain why there are elements of TBB on his semi long running chat show TV Total. Loud coloured set, host occasionally fooling around with the guests, audience participation.

As an aside, I watched An Audience with Bob Monkhouse on YouTube a few days ago. If my memory serves, it was from the early 90’s.

During it, Gaby Roslin asked him one of the questions from the audience, which in this case, was a reference to their working together to present The Big Breakfast together.

For how long did they present the show together? I have literally no recollection of that at all.
