"An" does not always appear before a word beginning with a vowel. Likewise "a" does not always appear before a word beginning with a consonant..

https://www.writersdigest.com/write-better-fiction/a-before-consonants-and-an-before-vowels-is-not-the-rule may make for some bedtime reading but in summary: "You use the "a" before words that start with a consonant sound and "an" before words that start with a vowel sound."

But in any event "A LWT Production..." sounds horrible compared to "An LWT Production", would you concur?

"An LWT Production", but "A London Weekend Television Production".

But does anyone know why it's "for BBC", but not "for the BBC"?

I might be wrong, but the "An" before "LWt" is because of the first consonent being pronounced "El" (aka there's a vowel sound at the start), hence the vowel rule applies, while "London" starts with a "Luh" sound, hence it doesn't apply there.

As for the BBC part, best guess here is that the logo stands for "the BBC".

Yes, as has been said, whether 'a' or 'an' is used depends on if it's a consonant or vowel sound, rather than the specific letters. For instance you would say "an historic occasion" rather than "a historic occasion".

And we refer to it as 'The' BBC because it's The British Broadcasting Corporation, just as we'd say The NHS because it's The National Health Service. Both acronyms end with a word which makes more sense when you use 'The'. Why they insist on "For BBC" is beyond me, apart from the fact it looked less messy when the BBC's branding was streamlined in 1997.

A LWT Production sounds so so wrong.

It shouldn't be - it's THE BBC as it's a Corporation as opposed to ITV which is just Independent Television.

The only thing I can think of for the reason they are using just BBC is that it could be said to sound more friendly than THE BBC. Still grammatically incorrect though, unless of course they do what KFC and BP did and say that BBC doesn't stand for anything anymore, it's just three letters which are the name of the company. They could even build this into a clever promo about how the BBC is independent - 'BBC doesn't stand for anything'!?

Well, not quite, but it seems either standards are slipping or they've relaxed their rules. Hadn't noticed this before, on The Games (credits also weren't in Reem).

THIS is what I started this thread for!

That’s awful!

Couldn't they have found a version of the logo that has a black background at least? Also, they're supposed to use a single colour version anyway aren't they?
