I can see why they want to stick with the 5 Live name, it’s much more recognisable than Radio 5 and just like 6 Music helps gives the higher numbered stations a bit of personality.
Still don’t understand where they’re going with Radio 5 Live Sports Extra though. It’s always been a ridiculous name and 5 Live Extra (or 5 Live Sports) would work much better.
Call it Radio 5 Sports Extra and you lose the link to the 5 Live brand. Never mind everything on this station is by its very nature ‘live’.

Day to day they just call it “sports extra” when talking about it on 5live... so makes perfect sense if that’s the colloquial name

I agree. There is no “Radio 5” for it to link to and I hope that doesn’t change. It’s a mess really. When the station is off air the name still contains the word “Live”.
I think “5 Live Sports Extra” works well for another reason - during Sports programming on the main station they can say “X is here on 5 Live Sport and Y is over on 5 Live Sports Extra”.

I agree with those who say BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra is a bit of an unwieldy name, but it just seems if you drop any part of it, it doesn’t really work anymore…
Drop the ‘Live’, and you lose the link to 5 Live. Drop the ‘Sports’ and it no longer sounds like a station that contains only sport. Drop the ‘Extra’ and it no longer sounds like a part-time offshoot.
I just don’t think there’s a good solution.

I think it looks longer than it sounds – after the 'BBC Radio' part (which doesn't need saying), it's mostly one syllable words. Like you say, they're all justified. '5 Live' feels like one word, so familiar is it. So it kind of feels like only those two extra words.
It feels well established to me, and I say that as someone who doesn't listen to 5 Live or the sister station. I think often on here we want brand names to be neat and tidy, but sometimes they just can't be, or are a problem that doesn't need fixing.
