It's less about them being "big areas" (several English regions have larger populations than at least 2 of the 3 Nations) and more that they've separate playout chains, which makes things a lot less complicated.

The BBC nations have from 11 days after the launch of digital television stopped opting out Of the London playout schedule because they operate schedules of their own….( And have seamless opt within those)
But English regions still opt out…… and will continue to do so both seamless and scheduled

Surely it has more to do with the fact the 'Nations' have lots of 'non news' programmes too, such as sports coverage, and also the timeshift of network shows. They are far bigger organisations than each of the English regions.
It's a different model to 60/70/80s ITV, where broadly the bigger the region in terms of population, the more of a regional service had to be provided, though that ended up with ITN having to subsidise UTV's news operation I think ?

Yes of course the Nations have an awful lot of variation from the Network feed, including their own presentation.
It's just of note that usually improvements in the past have started in London and spread out from there.
HD coverage (for regional news) has been unusual in that respect.

There's far more centralised architecture of the transmission now of course. Long gone are the days when the local regional studio was directly connected to its transmitter. Even the BBC nations send their output back to a couple of sites in England, and their transmitters are fed from there

Is the plan for all English regions to go live on BBC One HD at the same time, or will they be gradually be rolled out over a few months? If the latter maybe they could start with the 'This is England' macro regions to potentially allow viewers who's HD region hasn't gone live to see a nearby bulletin (as per ITV HD does/used to on Freeview).

I wholeheartedly disagree, as the London regional news would be "wrong" for about 75% of the population.
Viewers who might not necessarily be savvy enough to understand that they need only switch over to "a different version of BBC One" in order to see their correct local programme would end up either begrudgingly sitting through BBC London or choosing to watch something else entirely on a different channel.
The Red Screen Of Death caption conveys the information to empower viewers to know where to find their regional news. Simply broadcasting BBC London nationally would not do this.
Until such a time as BBC One HD has the technical capability to split into all of the regions/sub-regions, either such a holding caption or a revival of a "UK Today" type of programme is/was the only solution that treats viewers/Licence Fee-payers across the *whole* of England/IoM/Ch.Islands fairly and equally.
It would mean spending some money on something that can be easily distract you from the regional programme that can be watched on the same platform you're watching the BBC One HD channel on.
It made probably sense back in 1998 because of the digital/analogue differences

I suppose the idea is to get people to turn over and watch their regional news, so the red screen does a better job of that than a UK Today-type programme or simulcasting the news channel.
It's a bit of a rarity really, a bit of telly designed to make you want to change channel (well, a rarity for it to be intentional, anyway!)

I would assume the changing of BBC One Eng HD to BBC One London HD could happen quite easily to Sky/Freesat viewers from this Friday or could it.
Even though the broadcast streams are on different platforms. The channel itself is the very same one that is broadcasted on every platform.
The BBC One Eng HD feed on Sky/Freesat could switchover to BBC One London HD from Friday onwards once the BBC give official notice to their Sky viewers in advance that it will be done. Very little changes in capacity would be required for it to take place.

That's a fair assessment, but I do think there is a reasonable question to be asked about why viewers in the nations seem to be getting more value for money for their license fees. Scottish audiences aren't paying more for the BBC Scotland channel for example.
Perhaps if the English Regions were funded to a similar level as equivalently sized nations, they would be able to produce non-news programming too. It does seem that views in the Nations get more bang for their buck.

isn't the common counterargument that one BBC region might have multiple local BBC radio stations whereas the BBC nations don't. Whether that adds up I don't know
