But of course they tried Nick at Nite, as a strand.and all they did was stick Neighbours on it, a handful of US Nick at Nite shows (about three IIRC) and some other regular Nickelodeon programming and that was it. Believe that's all gone now though.
Neighbours? Taking advantage of the fact Viacom owns Channel 5, eh? Usually it's the other way around - Channel 5's kids shows mostly coming from Nickelodeon.

It's a mix of both, clearly trying to save money by sharing content across all their channels.
Who would have thought though that Channel 5 would be the last ones still showing kids shows on their main channel... and still producing a fair amount of new content at that as well, not just churning out imports. Compared to Channel 4 which gave up showing any kids content a LONG time ago (and even then it was just years old repeats of The Hoobs on a loop), let alone actually making any- probably have to go back 20 years for the last time they explicitly made kids (rather than teen/T4) content, not even having a kids channel or at least a slot on one channel (like littleBe).
Ironic when you look at tv schedules from the 80s/early 90s when there were plenty of weekend mornings, Sundays particularly, where Channel 4 were the only ones showing kids shows, with politics and other current affairs shows on BBC1 and TV-am and OU on BBC2, if they were on air at all.

Do you mean "main channel" as BBC One, as BBC Two is showing kids shows on Saturday mornings (they should've kept with Saturday mash up on BBC Two, they clearly have nothing else to put on it anyway)
It's a shame that there are so few kids' shows on 'grown-up channels' nowadays; there are some really good kids' shows that are entertaining for all age groups, so it would be nice if they were shown on channels where more people would be likely to discover them. Channel 5 seems to be aware that a lot of adults like SpongeBob as they show it on weekend mornings as a regular programme (i.e. not part of the Milkshake block). I think it would be a good idea for BBC Three to air a few kids' shows that are popular with adults too in the early evening seeing as it's replacing CBBC in that timeslot.
Milkshake is a pre-school block - it's shows are either UK originated or sourced from Nick Jr. Spongebob isn't a pre-school show, hence it airing outside the block. They did the same with Nickelodeon's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoons, and Power Rangers too when they had that.
5 also had Shake! Which featured teen programming. It ran on and off throughout the years but finally was axed for good in 2011 and was replaced by Power Rangers and the like. 5's rights to Power Rangers conveniently ran out around the time Viacom bought C5, so it could air NickToons in that slot instead.
5 ditched PR after the takeover, because Nick had already got rid of the Rangers too. I've always believed that not to be a coincidence. That'll be why it ended up on Pop. They initially replaced it with Ninja Turtles.

The Simpsons is edited to be more PG on Sky and Channel 4. A majority of the episodes (from season 5 onwards at least) are rated 12 unedited. But to be fair, even though it's edited to be PG, frequent uses of words like 'crap', 'damn' 'hell' 'ass' and rarely 'bitch' are left in during daytime airings whereas CN UK struggle to even get away with 'flip' while the US counterpart have shows like Regular Show, Steven Universe and Infinity Train.
I have a feeling the look will have to be edited in order to be shown on UK TV and EMEA too, at least the current form

Yeah that’s 100% right, alt lines have been cut back in a few good times in RS series. Stops things being edited out as you say.

It did still technically exist until 2014, as CNX became Toonami became Cartoon Network Too, and in the later years of CN Too they did start airing a lot more action-oriented content before it got turned into a timeshift channel which remains to this day.
Speaking of kids channels, Disney Channel UK in 2006 and 2007, was seriously the time where standards really started to decrease and presentation really started going automated (in 2008 things would improve) once the channel went from premium to basic, and with the replacement of Toon Disney with Cinemagic.

In general, all the good presentation they had, was replaced in mid-2006 by a cheap menu/ECP (according to the show), and with no ident or bumper before the shows themselves, which is kind of peculiar for a UK channel.

But again, even content gradually got worse and with many more repeats.

Never thought it was the same when kids channels canned the live in-vision presentation. I always liked that,made the channels seem friendly, but it's long gone now for everyone except CBBC and CBeebies. A shame considering the amount of effort that used to be put into it.
At least CITV and CBBC have made attempts at bringing back Saturday morning telly. Haven't seen them properly, but looking at clips of them, both Scrambled! and Saturday Mash Up! seem pretty alright.

Except CITV cancelled Scrambled last year, with nothing replacing it and CBBC have recently moved Saturday Mash Up to Glasgow and in a much smaller studio for some reason.
