The official London news thread. Thanks to [mention]all new Phil[/mention], for reminding us in the ITV News thread that there wasn't one already.
So here we are.
Continuing the discussion about the revolving door (or should that be chair?
) on ITV News London (or better known as London Tonight):

Are you referring to Duncan Golestani? I quite like his presentational style. A straight forward look down the barrel of the camera lens reading the news, that’s all I personally require,
No huffing and puffing, no ‘sssippp’ noise at the beginning of every story. No raised eyebrows, no squinting or narrowing of the eyes when disapproving of the people featured in the report. No bobbing and weaving side to side, no turning of the head from side to side with eyes firmly fixed on the camera lens. No forward lunge to the camera to emphasise any particular point. No completely unnecessary emphasis of every third word. No snide asides. The occasional smile if reading a story with a pleasant outcome.
Just reading the news to me, that’s all I require. I find Lucrezia Millarini has a similar style which
I find similarly efficient and neutral.
No doubt in today’s ‘personality’ led presentation neither will go very far. Just my opinion of course.

I agree, I think Duncan is the best presenter ITV London has at the moment.
On a separate note, I do wish that ITV London would be run by a separate team to ITN as per other regions.
I've become really tired of ITV and BBC London only producing 5/10 mins of local news and the rest is national news presented by a different presenter or a regurgitation of a national package with no localisation of content. What's worse is when the news item has a focus on Celebrity content that has no connection to London (not even related to a London show date).
I get that London is the Captial, so will have a national/global outlook, but at the same time there are so many local stories in Greater London suburbs that need telling which the BBC and ITV are not reporting on.
I've started to find it more interesting watching BBC South East as their content is more relatable and close to me in South London.

I agree. They could even hive it off into its own company, just for London news - a sort of London News... Network, if you will?
I agree that it does lack the identity that other regions have, and I think the name 'ITV News London' doesn't help either. I know all regions are called 'ITV News [whatever]' these days, but I think with London particularly it just makes it look like the national news's poorer cousin.
The duplication of national stories is very noticeable, Monday had an Adele story on ITV London which then featured again on the Evening News. I know Adele is a huge star from London but they could have at least put a different spin on it.
It would be nice if ITV London could do more outside broadcasts rather than be in the studio. The only times I've seen them on location is when Prince Philip passed away and the Mayoral debate.
To be fair other regions don't do a huge amount of hosting on location - often only for stories where the national bulletins might be doing so.

Regarding London regional news, haven’t they always not had the same identity as other regions, the fact It’s in London so the idea of a regional presenter being a big star probably doesn’t work the same. Also aren’t the viewing figures proportionately lower due to many Londoners not being at home at 6:00/6:30?
The presentation always seems much colder and more national news in style, mostly over the years BBC and ITV haven’t been double headed, and even when they were there wasn’t banter with the weatherman like you get elsewhere. On the BBC Newsroom South East was very sensible and serious, and BBC London News is hardly warm and cosy. Would Riz Lateef make an appearance at a local fayre and judge the jam making competition like the host of Look North would?
Of course back in the day London didn’t even get a proper news service 7 days a week, with LWT originally not doing much, and the BBC not running short bulletins in London
Another factor since ITN took over from LNN is cost cutting. At first it wasn't noticeable on-air as London Tonight had their own studio in the ITV regional style set with all the changes such as moving into the ITV Newsroom off camera, but a few years back ITV London moved into the national news studio and uses the same gallery team, in effect running the desk from 6-7pm for ITV News London and ITV Evening News with a pre-record after the London weather to allow cameras to be switched to pointing at the national desk.
It's the same for presenters where the London GMB presenter who as part of their shift moves to the Lunchtime news as a reporter and whoever is on weekend pres duty for the national bulletin also has to present ITV News London. On a Saturday, the bulletin is straight after the national bulletin presented from the national desk by the evening presenter, while on Sundays, the daytime duty presenter is on London in the evening to finish their shift from the shorter London desk.

Some interesting points you raise there. I think you're right - London news has always been a little bit more serious (and indeed I understand until the 80s(?) the Beeb didn't really bother with London news). I think LNN was an aberration - albeit a very welcome one - which did very much have its own identity and presenters, many of whom were there (in the same slots, I might add) for more than a decade: Alastair Stewart of course being the main example, but also Paul Greene in the mornings and Anna Maria Ashe at the weekend (and latterly also at 6pm). Then when ITN took over, it became a free-for-all...

There is banter with the weather presenter, perhaps not so much on BBC London but there's usually good rapport between Sally and whoever presents on ITV London.

Not to do anyone down but I don’t really see how someone moves from weather to journalist/news reporter. Just seems like ITN want anyone onscreen.
I definitely agree with the other comments about London news being cold - the BBC presenters are so wooden in presentation

Sally was a reporter before she got the weather gig but it's always been part of the role to do reports even when Martin did the weather. It's no different to Laura Tobin or Alex Beresford presenting Tonight,

Totally understand if it’s a weather or environment related report which Alex or Laura did in the past however if most viewers see a weather reporter presenting a serious report it seems odd.
Sally is usually really up beat and has nice stories to end the show but a few weeks back she covered a serious story that wasn’t in keeping with her usual type of reports.
Maybe ITN had a shortage of reporters that evening.
I honestly don't see the issue with Sally presenting a serious news story, she may be the weather presenter but that doesn't make her any less of a journalist.
