Just watched Kirsty struggling her way through Newsnight, and it made me wonder…
In these days of increasingly single handed programmes, what would happen if the anchor couldn’t continue due to illness or voice going etc?
On Newsnight there’s usually on of the ‘editors’ on hand, many of whom have presented before, but what about other programmes, such as News at Ten on itv or the BBC Ten?
Has it ever happened?

I believe Annita McVeigh or Joanna Gosling lost their voice one morning or were taken ill on the News channel and a reporter ended up covering their slot at the last minute at the next available top of hour. Was quite a few years ago.
Stephen Dixon was seemingly quite unwell on Sky News Breakfast a few months back, and Vanessa Baffoe presented the last part of the third hour and then the fourth hour of the programme from memory (before doing her scheduled shift on air). Of course, as there are ad breaks to change presenters it’s not quite as apparent versus the other examples mentioned here.
Kenny Toal was taken ill on Tyne Tees’s North East Tonight in 2007 and had to leave midway through the show. It did leave Pam Royle on standby as his co-presenter however.
According to this pleasant Daily Mail article of the incident, he vomited in a bin under the desk just before they went to air and kept on doing this between reports.

I would always imagine that a back up presenter would never usually be far away should a single headed presenter be caught out minutes before going to air, but it could literally end up being anyone as a last resort.
There was this instance with Mary Nightingale having to get Joel Hills to take over for a while and still not fully recovering afterwards though did battle on through the rest of the bulletin.

Charlie Stayt left an edition of BBC Breakfast half an hour into an edition in November 2015, to be replaced by Sally Nugent for the rest of the programme, if I recall correctly:

I can't find the video on YouTube, but I remember Kate Garraway not being able to continue newsreading on GMB one day in December 2014. She didn't make it very far into the show before being swapped out for Louisa James

Surprised actually ITV News have never tried Joel Hills in a presenting role. As for Mary she revealed in an interview quite early in her career she was prone to losing her voice suddenly which has always added an element of danger to her bulletins.
On Good Morning Britain on 4th December 2014*, Kate Garraway had a very hoarse voice despite claiming to feel perfectly well otherwise. She was acting as the newsreader on this occasion and got partway through her bulletin before handing over to Susanna to finish off. She was replaced (openly, and convivially, on air) by Louisa James in time for the next news update.

I have had a few experiences of fainting over the years, a horrible experience (although the doctors never found anything wrong with me after the event!)
