I noticed BBC Radio Sussex breakfast presenter Allison Ferns is now double shifting with BBC South East Today as a reporter.

Do we know why we're getting so many pan-regional bulletins lately? I don't remember it occurring so frequently before. Covid staffing issues?

Simply because there are far more people off with covid at the moment. There was already a smaller workforce coming into the building so increase the number of people who are required to isolate for a period of time and you’ll get fewer people at work.

Unusually, tonight's SET came from the soft area instead of the desk.

The desk has been replaced in the main presentation area by a sofa and small coffee table on the lunchtime programme today.

It looks like they've mothballed the old soft area for this new set. Presumably the new set is in preparation for the upcoming HD upgrade?

I'm not sure about BBC London as E is also used as a back-up studio for the NC.

BBC London has basically travelled in the opposite direction to the rest of the English regions over the past 20 years. What started as the most relaxed and informal regional news programme, has basically become the most straight-laced and formally presented one.

To be fair to South East Today, that desk was just short of 18-years old (first introduced in April 2004). Can't think of any other pieces of news studio furniture that have survived that long.

I'm pretty certain the red cube desk was part of the final look when they were at MHS - I vaguely recall that sometime after the 2008 white titles were introduced, an N6/TC7 style red coffee table replaced the red cube but that did not travel with them when they moved to NBH where they had a small oval desk similar in style to the one in N6 (which I recall being mentioned on the old forum moved up to Oxford).

Yes, it does look like the red cube era was from the MHS balcony going by this clip I've just found from 2007.
