I was doing research for my online RP, when I stumbled across the BBC's Decision '79 election coverage, where the famous 'King Arthur' music first made its debut. I now believe it to be one of the best pieces of theme music ever used on Television. And the original is the best one, because it sounds like its a cut off of a prog rock album.

How the blithering flip was that ever deemed to be "news"-appropriate?! It makes me think of either the White Rabbit in Disney's Alice in Wonderland singing "I'm late, I'm late, for a very important date..." and/or the Munchkins in The Wizard of Oz singing "The house began to pitch, the kitchen took a slitch, it landed on the wicked witch in the middle of a ditch..."

How fantastic and revolutionary the David Lowe "drumbeat & pips" style themes originally were has been ruined by a combination of sheer longevity and the endless subsequent tinkering.

I fantasise about some sort of updated version of the old Nine theme that you've posted becoming the basis of a totally new generic sound/look for all BBC News output. Fat chance.
You never know, though. Somebody in 1999 decided that orchestral themes were passé, and that percussion was the way to modernise. Somebody now deciding the exact opposite, is precisely the kind of thing that often happens. Trends tend to go in such cycles. So maybe, just maybe... ?
It could even be argued that the increasing layers of "strings" ? etc that have been slapped onto the David Lowe themes as they've been Trigger's Broom-ed™ (a.k.a. Sugababes-ed™) to death over the years, means that we've been slowly edging back to "orchestral" for ages anyway.
