To be accurate, Panorama did a programme about Newsnight, whilst at the same time Newsnight did a programme about the Panorama about Newsnight. Hope that clears things up!

There's a clip somewhere on You Tube of Kenny Everett being interviewed about his sacking from Radio 1, where he laments there is one part of the Beeb filming him about being sacked by another .
I’m sure the significant duty of care issue which is alluded to is because it doesn’t look very good for Bashir, and the BBC are worried that the stress and public outcry might actually finish him off…

The BBC News Website’s own explainer of the cancellation of the Diana Panorama episode is quite something in itself.
David Sillito has mentioned on the News Channel that the report is due to come out just after 2pm.
Feels like this has massive implications for the BBC.
Felt like something went wrong on the BBC breaking of the story. Martine stumbling her way through it.

I can't help feeling Martin Bashir used his health as a convenient excuse to leave the BBC, rather than face being sacked if he'd stayed. A case of jumping before being pushed.
EDIT: Interesting to note at the bottom of the updated news article it mentions.

I guess they've judged that with "duty of care" showing it now whilst it's already in the headlines of all news outlets anyway carries a lower risk than if they'd showed it last week.
