BBC Wales are showing coverage of the election results on Friday afternoon after the lunchtime news at 1.45pm right up until 10.50pm whilst most programmes are being moved to BBC2 Wales.

ITV Wales meanwhile have coverage from 1.55pm until 5pm, the usual Wales At Six and then Wales Decides from 9pm-10pm. Beat the Chasers has been moved to 10.45pm with Dickenson's Real Deal from 2pm being shown at 11.45pm! Tenable and Tipping Point dont appear to have been rescheduled.

No weather graphics behind Derek on today's lunchtime bulletin.

The late bulletin last night and the GMB Wales bulletins this morning came from elsewhere in the studio with the Cardiff Bay backdrop on a screen behind the presenter. The presenter usually stands by a screen in the studio for the GMB bulletins. The studio would have been set up for the election results after Wales at Six last night. This is why its a shame they dont have a seperate studio for these type of events.

Over on BBC Wales their studios are very impressive. They also continue coverage right through to 10pm. On ITV Wales it would have made more sense to carry on at least until 6.30pm rather than go off air at 5pm and back at 6pm for Wales at Six.

Surely they're going to have to drop The Chase - it looks like 4-6pm will be the key point for results.

BBC Wales' graphics system can't handle this. Keeps freezing and glitching.

Also, as an aside, why are Scottish and English results being highlighted?

They didn't and it wasn't. Seems like this is going to drag on a fair bit today (and tomorrow).

They kept the desk in the usual Wales at Six position for the 9pm opt out.



Looking at this wide shot, I don't think the current set does the studio any justice and it actually makes it look a lot smaller than it is. There is potential to have a much grander looking set in that space.

Agree with that.

Something I would add that unlike some regions (*cough* UTV *cough*) ITV Wales do at least try to make the best use out of their current shoebox studio for their regional programming. For example, the studio does to an extent look and feel completely different during Sharp End with the lighter blue and the wooden theme, and I have also liked seeing Wales This Week use the studio in 'casual mode' with the coffee table for its links since the pandemic started.

It's a shame that ITV Wales don't have a larger studio and an second small set, like UTV currently have for UTV Life

I agree they do their best to give each programme its own feel using different furniture and lighting:

For what ITV Wales lacked in space and presentation, Andrea Byrne was an inspired choice, coming up with quips as "You were expecting to watch Judge Rinder" and going into breaks by informing viewers they could make a cuppa during commercial breaks.

Ellie Pitt was again another interesting choice, I haven't seen her since her days on Made in Bristol, but interviewing the politicians at the Senedd was excellent from that great vantage point. A shame it wasn't used as the main studio for Wales Decides instead of the main news set.

BBC Wales won on the use of their new base for sets and presentation, but ITV Wales was also a credible watch also if they were allowed to opt out for longer, there wouldn't have been the need to switch to BBC One Wales.

This is where not being able to use a secondary ITV channel to either switch coverage or move programmes too makes things a bit trickier, though clearly for the amount of times ITV Wales might need that option it isn't worth it.

Had the show been overnight as usual I'm sure ITV Wales would have put up a fair fight, but the daytime and evening results made things trickier for them - plus they seemed to have to take the ads during the afternoon almost as if they were airing ITV's regular show - which although for the first two hours they weren't really any results it just made it feel like less of an effort as ITV election shows are usually largely ad free (but largely overnight too!)


Must say though over on the BBC Nick Servini has been excellent, just effortlessly hosting hours of continuous coverage.

I notice in those caps that there's a black panel added on top of the window frame, which isn't there when it's set up for news. Perhaps to deflect the refection of the lighting?

I'd be interested to know what coverage you were watching, as the results started coming thick and fast after 5pm, so much so that BBC Wales couldn't show all of the declarations live. ITV Wales literally went off air just as the results started flooding in. Really poor timing by ITV Wales to go off air at 5pm, The Chase definitely should have been dropped.

But I'm guessing it wasn't ITV Wales' decision as to how much opt-out time they were allowed yesterday.

And I think ITV Wales had to schedule in the ad breaks at the same time as what was going out on network during the 9-10pm Wales Decides.
