I personally find there's something extra chilling about pre-recorded programmes being faded out to black. The fading out of Borsalino will always be a goosebumps moment.
It is now because we know what came after, but at the time it would have been puzzling or disappointing at first.

There's a good ESPN 30 For 30 documentary about that which does the rounds on BT Sport and presumably is now up on Disney+, called The Day the Series Stopped. Learned from it that it was the Goodyear blimp ABC had up for the game that captured those famous images of the damage to the Bay Bridge. Also quite a scary bit involving a worker who was climbing up the floodlights when it hit and had to cling on for dear life!
Not TV, but I remembering listening to a live OB of Pete Tong’s Essential Selection from Glasgow for Radio 1 Sound City in 1994 with an obviously “up for it” crowd.
There was a very awkward moment where Pete had to hand back to the studio for the news that Kurt Cobain had taken his own life and then Pete had to resume a live Friday night OB.

This is the much more dignified way that news was announced during a baseball match on ESPN. The on air announcent is shown 4 minutes into this clip.
Amusingly at one point everyone in the stadium and viewing knew the news but the players hadn't the foggiest what was going on and why the crowd were getting a bit excited

Yes it won't be exactly as it went out, as mentioned by the local newsreader there was 15 minutes between the quake and her appearing on air, and presumably nothing broadcast in between due to the power cut.
Presumably local viewers wouldn't have seen that networked ABC World Series caption either

At least nowadays the interrupted show would be available on catchup. If people really wanted to see the end of the programme BBC One faded out to announce Prince Philip's death, all they have to do is go to iPlayer.

I remember that, for some reason though after a while they did say something like "we are here for sport" and showed footage of a swimming event before they finally decided it was better not to show any more sport for the rest of the morning.

We actually studied that in GCSE geography, one of the things we were shown were some of the BBC Breakfast News from the following morning, which probably excited me more than anyone else in the class.

That's from the period when the news was a bit jumpy post 11/9 and suddenly everything was urgent breaking news. No idea what's going on there, that plane crash was a big story at the time as naturally everyone assumed it was another attack. But why on earth were they breaking into programmes to go to a 'statement from the prime minister' when he wasn't making a statement but talking (presumably answering a question) about India?
Crashing into News 24 like that was terrible though - even with the strap on screen it's difficult to grasp the context of what was happening when you have the PM talking about visiting India.
