No, local elections have never come from Studio E before. I suspect the studio will still be lit in red though, it was when they were in Studio B (the problem is that purple and teal, which were once the go to colours for election coverage, have now been taken up by UKIP and Reform UK). I won't be surprised if they try lighting the newsroom in different colours, as they did when they were in N9.

I'm not sure about the early 90s, but local elections during the 1970s and 80s were covered as Tonight/Newsnight specials, so presumably came from the Tonight/Newsnight set (first at Lime Grove, then TC2). 1994, 95 and 96 appear to come from Television Centre (too big for the Millbank studio), but the sets don't appear large enough to justify TC1 (though it could have been for OB purposes).

I'm not sure ITV have ever done local election coverage outside of ordinarily scheduled programmes, they certainly haven't in recent years.
UTV have coverage all afternoon on Friday, then at 7pm and 9pm on Friday evening.

I worked on a local elections overnighter when I worked at LNN. I was manning a phone along with the entire newsroom as the stringers called in the results. We were using BASYS back then and I am very proud to say I didn't make a mistake that went to air. ;-)
On ITV it looks like GMB are giving way to Local Elections Specials on Friday morning with GMB only on air for 10 mins, according to the ITV Hub schedule.

They won't - a large proportion of English Councils are counting during the day on Friday. We'll have a very limited set of results by breakfast time on Friday with lots more coming in through the day.

That is obviously an error in the Hub TV guide - it's the same on Thursday too and has happened previously where a brief insert within a programme is scheduled to last the duration when in reality it's just a few minutes before returning to the programme (i.e. with recent ITV News inserts into This Morning).
ITV haven't touched local elections for a few years though I think some regions used to have local programmes around midnight for half an hour or so back in the noughties.

Thanks for pointing out. I had just finished scouring the various listings and it was beginning to look like an error. I do recall there being special editions of Wales Today depending on what happens, though the only variation I can see currently is an hour long edition in the evening.

Yes you used to get a regional election programme that lasted half an hour or an hour at around 11pm and contained a grand total of zero election results. It was basically a waste of time.

Always a good chance though to take a good look around the region’s leisure centres - most of which no longer exist (which is a problem for finding places to count!)

Though, to be fair, the BBC's local election coverage finished weirdly early until fairly recently. Wasn't until 2009 that they started returning to the special results programme during Friday daytime on BBC One or Two. Previously, coverage only continued on News 24 (and that wasn't from the main team).
Of course, overnight coverage of local elections is arguably a bit pointless. It's not a matter of real importance like a general election, with most results not coming through until later. Would be much better to just have a shorter post-results special on Friday evenings - there you could actually analyse the results properly and save you from hours of politicians repeating the same three talking points on a loop.

Yes it’s a fairly good for the news agenda that you find out who the next government will be the moment you wake up, but I’m sure people could wait to find out who is running your local council.
The guide in the Saorview app is saying RTÉ One & the RTÉ News Channel will have coverage of these elections on Friday afternoon at 15:00 to 17:40.
There are also two editions of The Week in Politics during Saturday & Sunday afternoon on RTÉ One/RTÉ News Channel.
Saturday's edition will begin at 1pm.
Sunday's edition will be on the usual time of 12 midday.

It can be a difficult balance - you need to do certain things on the night anyway (collect all the boxes, bring them to a central location) so for some it can be cheaper to do it then and get it done rather than pay for the heavy security needed to keep them until the morning.
Plus if they're counted overnight it minimises impact on the day to day operations of the venue - aka the local leisure centre.
