I suspect what he means that as journalists it must be difficult to be off the air at this moment.

Probably mixed thoughts of personal safety versus a noteable story to tell.

Except Maitlis has been off Newsnight during a yet news period to make a documentary series, and Sopel was never going to be anchoring live coverage anyway. Emily also tweeted that Americast has ended prematurely to make way for Ukrainecast… Neither of them have actually left the BBC yet - they just already weren’t in positions where they primarily covered stories like this.

Plus, Ukrainecast - a podcast?! - has been heavily praised and increasingly listened to for its coverage. Absolutely no reason Maitlis and Sopel won’t be able to do equivalent work elsewhere.

Besides, is Marr regretting getting to do an hour a night on LBC on whatever he wants instead of 1 hour on a Sunday morning? Is Huw Edwards really ‘in it’ doing a few minutes of newsreading a few nights a week while most of the Ten comes live from Kyiv or Lviv? It’s just a silly comment.

Does he have a dual role, or has given up the newsreading?

James has reported on many conflicts for the BBC, but I've never seen him chyroned as Europe Correspondent. Probably suits his purpose for being deployed to Ukraine. He also presents on the News Channel. Fantastic talent!

I always think he’s Clark Kent... maybe there’s truth to that!!

Without wishing to stray too far from the point of the thread... I don't disagree with you but I think Hugh Sykes may have a point. Newsnight is on the road this week being anchored from a variety of locations and - had she stayed - I'm sure that Emily Maitlis would have been dispatched to one or more of these locations. Equally, Jon Sopel may have been 'in between' roles at the BBC but I'm sure the BBC would have used him in the field had he stayed; he has the experience reporting from war zones, can anchor, and is familiar to both domestic and World audiences.

I think perhaps there's more nuance to Sykes' comment than appreciated. There's a difference between the way in which he and his colleagues were treated (told to reapply for their jobs and deciding to take redundancy/retirement) versus the way in which Maitlis and Sopel have moved on (not least of all for money and freedom to 'speak out'). I'm yet to be convinced that Global is the best platform for them. Given the likes of Nick Ferrari and James O'Brien - both big characters - I see Maitlis as the better fit.

Exposure is important. The BBC - for all its faults - is a terrific vehicle for cross-promotion and for widespread dissemination of a message. I don't think that Maitlis or Sopel would have necessarily added anything to the coverage but, as Sykes says, "out of sight, out of mind".

Does Andrew Marr regret his decision? Who knows. Unless he gives an interview and confirms one way or another, we're not likely to know. Yet again it comes back to exposure. I appreciate Global has exposure but when it matters the public still turn to the BBC, ITN and Sky. The BBC still has cachet as a brand (however dented and tarnished it may be).
