Quote: I can't ever see ITV sticking the News on at 7.00pm, the 7.00pm slot is very valuable to ITV and it would see the audience half at that time, plus it's been home to Emmerdale since the late 1980's, ITV aren't that stupid.

And now look what we have - an hour long news and Emmerdale at 7.30! How times change, eh?

Don’t bank on me making correct predictions, i said in the old place back in the mid 2000’s that News at Ten would never come back. How wrong I was.

Ha ha - to be fair, I think even ITV would have said the same as you back then. I think it's relatively accepted that News at Ten was only brought back out of desperation - they'd tried 11pm, they'd tried 10.30, neither worked - so in the end the only other choice was to go head-to-head with the Beeb.
I do wonder if ITV could do it, would they axe News at Ten altogether once again, or is the brand name still strong in 2022?

Considering they are very happy for a large chunk of the year to boot News at Ten to a later slot on many occasions, especially during most Fridays of the year, and during the three weeks or so with I'm A Celebrity being on, is the News at Ten brand that important to them now?

I think the News at Ten brand still has a degree of cultural resonance, but its strength has been diluted by both the BBC and Sky also using the name and the core News at Ten branding elements being used across the rest of ITV News in the last 20 years (though this isn't a bad thing).
News at Ten won't be going anywhere. I don't solely read the extension of the Evening News to being about a commitment to news either, but a way to keep up the quota of original content on the main channel. It's no secret ITV are shifting their attention towards ITVX and that many scripted shows will appear there first. Therefore upping the news quota ups the original content slightly on ITV, offsetting the more expensive shows premiering on streaming services instead.

Indeed I think there is more likely to be an extension of News at Ten to an hour than there is a removal of it. Indeed with the late regional news often given a 20 minute slot in the schedule (despite the actual bulletin being less than half that long) it's nearly there anyway.
I was going to say, the earlier issue with no News at Ten was the lack of any alternative programming at 10pm that caught ITV viewers, and if anything, investment in non-peak programming will have fallen over time.
The headline bed in the regional news preview sounded subtly different to me - more emphasis on the beat.

Or maybe I've gone mad.
No ads tonight between the regional news and national bulletin.

Not just you ! I noticed a slight difference Smile
I feel the new extended Evening News, especially the last part, is full of padding as I thought it would be. Banter between Mary and the weather forecaster, sponsorship from Heinz beans, 2X adverts, banter between Mary and Tom Bradbury - all pushing Emmerdale Farm & Corrie back half an hour. I don't feel it is required - how are the ratings holding up?
It's not pushing back the soaps, it's filling half an hour because the soaps have been pushed back.

I mean, does that mean the regional news is all padding because that's what happens a lot on there, bar the ad breaks?
Great seeing Bill Neely back on itv news this morning. I remember him presenting as a youngster

Yes good to see him. From Twitter it looks like Bill will be on both days this weekend.

Not scheduled yet for next Saturday on Sky EPG but that could change.

Very much agreed. His insight as well as his presenting style kind of overshadowed Rageh’s. It would be good if they could place him as presenter if these Weekend Specials do continue.
Was it co-hosted?

Presumably now ITV have announced their new set of weekend programmes these won't continue much longer, though of course we hope they don't need too. I still think ITV would be better off doing a Sunday edition of GMB (say 8am-10am) year round rather than the pre-recorded shows through spring and summer, though of course there is a reason they prefer that strategy.
