Linear TV is losing viewers to streaming services like Netflix and Disney+. For this reason alot of the linear TV channels are suffering from the schedulers block with MTV US showing endless Ridiculousness and Challenge over here showing alot of The Chase everyday.
In the future they should be The Apprentice style TV series to find the next media mogul with a business plan to set a cut price TV platform provider to rival Sky and Virgin with in house linear channels incorporating innovative and interactively to complete with streaming.

Okay, so I have Peacock Ad free as premium is free if you’re a Comcast subscriber and it was a few extra bucks to bump it to get no ads.

Anyway I was watching a “Peacock Original” Trigger Point (ITV) even though I don’t see any production relationship between Comcast/Universal or and HTM.

It seemed like to me there were commercial breaks every four minutes (as denoted by the title card - something I learned about UK TV the title card denoted breaks). I know in the UK there’s a 7 minute average per hour law. Now does the law dictate the frequency. Or is this just the show more likely chopped up to different segments for international audiences?

From what I understand ad breaks on Peacock are under a minute so it’s usually not that much time.

The running time of the show is equivalent to an hours long show in the US - 41-44 minutes. But we usually have longer spans of time between breaks which then result into 2-3 minute times.

So if the BBC wanted to continue showing catchpoint they would have to pay a fee to SBS? Or would SBS only own the made for Scotland programming? I know catchpoint is made in Scotland but I think it's also network Scotland commission.
the quote that's made me ask is "The SBS would continue to supply the BBC with same level of network programming, in return for access to the corporation's services in Scotland"

Here's something interesting I stumbled across yesterday.

Thameside TV was a pirate TV station that broadcast to London in 1984/5, one of a handful of attempts at pirate TV in the UK. It was a spin off of a long running radio pirate Thameside Radio and the website in tribute to the station has uploaded 3 of their broadcasts, although the 3rd never went out as the station was raided.

https://thamesideradio.org/tsr/tr_progra...41007.html

There's not much in terms of original content but those continuity announcements are one of the few examples of UK pirate TV, albeit taken from the master tape not off air. Here's some more details about Thameside
http://www.curiousbritishtelly.co.uk/202...e.html?m=1

The other vaguely successful pirate TV station was Telstar TV in Birmingham, it broadcast on BBC2's frequency after it went off air. I remember it getting a mention on Newsround at the time, although it seems by the time it made the news it had already ended - the people running it informed the media
There's no footage, but here's an interesting forum thread about it including a long post by someone who was involved

https://www.thepiratearchive.net/forum/v....php?t=187

I wonder how many people actually watched these. Unless you had a rotary dial TV set we weren't used to tuning around the TV dial. Telstar probably caught a few people who left BBC2 on after closedown in the small area of Birmingham they covered. Thameside had the advantage of an established radio station to promote it, and the TV audio was transmitted on 90.5 FM.

Price, suitability for both entertainment and work use (specifically for iPad Air and Nvidia Shield)and how many lumens are needed for daytime use.
Has anyone got such a setup and does work for them?

A former colleague of mine's son has given me an lot of photos that his dad took of the BBC operation for the London Marathon.
I've just scanned them in, and thought that a few of you on here may appreciate a few of them.
We were based at New London Bridge House, which has since been demolished, and is where the Shard now stands.
From this vantage point we have both TV and Radio communications operations, linking between various sites, but mainly doing the mobiles operation.
In those days it was helicopters with cameras fitted and motorbikes being relayed back by them.
We then sent those signals back either to Crystal Palace, Swains Lane or East Tower at TVC (I can't recall which, and it may have changed year to year).
The radio operation was receiving backpacks and commentary from a milk float on Band I kit, and some 1.5GHz links too.
No satellite operation or planes back then - so here are the photos, starting with the kit one level below the roof for TV.

Another on the same level for Radio.

Then up to the roof and the helicopter receive 4' dishes, with the sights to try to follow the right helicopter!

Here is the talkback and Radio Band I kit

Finally, another which I cannot recall what it was for, unless it was a backup for the other heli receivers.
(Note that there are too many receivers to fit on the brackets so two are dangling on tie.)
There were times when they flew around overhead and the triax cables would knot up, and would require unwinding.....
Not a massive amount of information about this just yet, but it sounds like they're trying to give Sky and their Pick a run for their money. They're pushing the convenience of having all your streaming services integrated on one device, but they're offering a bonus of having little discounts on each subscription you sign up to. Not sure what's on offer in terms of live TV, whether there's any Freeview functionality, or if it's running on some kind of Now basis like BT TV.
It would've sounded like a nice idea for anyone who didn't want a cable drilled through the wall, but by the sounds of it, it's only available to VM broadband customers.

Quote:The UK streaming boom is officially over after the number of homes with services such as Netflix, Amazon and Disney+ fell in the first quarter, as the cost of living crisis forced hundreds of thousands of streaming fans to slim down their subscriptions to just a few favourites.

The number of UK homes that have at least one paid-for subscription streaming service fell by 215,000 in the first quarter – ending a decade of almost uninterrupted growth in the popularity of streaming services – as households cut budgets to cope as inflation runs at a three decade high.

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2022/a...ut-budgets

Having seen this article today, I was not surprised as I have in the past month actually axed all the streaming services. Disney plus, Netflix and Apple TV. I have Amazon left from a family member.

I didn't see the value in them anymore, perhaps once every so often they will have a good thing to watch. But I think I will reserve streaming for Christmas time etc and binge everything then instead of paying constantly and waiting.

Could this be a shift towards the end of Netflix and more power for the BBC I player and the old style film companies which are now starting to stream?
Have you ended any subscriptions recently?

For example the Concert for Ukraine was in mono I noticed but oddly soaps and certain other progs retain there stereo sound. I'm sure most won't care much but in 2022 you'd think it wasn't too much of a technical achievement to resolve this issue fairly quickly after I emailed !

I'm conflicted on this. He has the kind of industry experience that I feel lends itself best to a role like this, but he's now in favour of privatising Channel 4, despite having been against it as Channel 4's Chairman, and of course he was famously anti-Doctor Who when he was at the BBC in the 80s. What does everyone think?

After 10 months of the announcement from AT&T and Discovery of the spin-off of WarnerMedia from AT&T and its merger under Discovery, it is finally happening. Today, Discovery's shareholders approved the final hurdle needed to create the second-largest media company in the world, after The Walt Disney Company and overtaking Paramount Global. The merger, a Reverse Morris Trust, will be structured as a 71%/29% venture between AT&T and Discovery shareholders, respectively, and AT&T will receive US$43 billion in cash and debt as part of the merger, as part of John Stankey's massive reorganization plans to restructure the finances of the telco, after a rocky period with Randall Stephenson at the helm (which included its acquisition of then-Time Warner). Discovery is also looking for additional investment to receive an additional US$15 billion dollars in debt.

https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/discove...235201881/

The combined company will have Discovery CEO David Zaslav as CEO and Chairman, with current WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar leaving the company altogether. The company will be switching to a streaming-first approach like most of its competitors, but Zaslav said that the company plans a more wise investment in content, with spending being restricted to around US$10 billion in place of the current US$20 billion both companies spend on content. The result is a plan to compete in the streaming wars in a much more profitable way, even if the group has three streaming services: HBO Max, Discovery+ and the upcoming CNN+. The group plans to bundle all three of the services in the run-up of a possible merger to create a super-OTT platform.

The company also will have a grand portfolio of global brands: Adult Swim, All3Media (JV with Liberty Global), Alloy Entertainment, Animal Planet, Bleacher Report, Boomerang, Cartoon Network, Cartoonito, Cinemax, CNN Worldwide, The CW (with Paramount), DC Comics, Discovery Channel, Discovery Family (with Hasbro/eOne), the DMAX network, DKISS (Spain), Eurosport, Eve (Asia), Fatafeat (MENA), HBO, HGTV, HLN, Investigation Discovery, Food Network (with Nexstar), Grupa TVN Discovery (Poland), Joyn (Germany, with ProSiebenSat.1 Media), the Magnolia Network (with Chip and Joanna Gaines), Megamedia (Chile, with the Bethia company), Motor Trend (with Source Interlink), OWN (with Harpo Studios), Quest, Really, Rooster Teeth, the Science Channel, TBS, Tele 5 (Germany), TLC, TNT, Three (New Zealand), TruTV, Travel Channel, Turner Classic Movies, Turner Sports, Warner Bros., and Warner TV Europe, among many other brands.

As told in the Variety report, the merger is set to be completed in mid-April.

(EDIT 2022/04/08: Merger is being completed, the thread has been renamed to reflect the milestone).
