Sad to hear that Alan Hawkshaw has died. He composed many famous TV themes, notably Countdown, Grange Hill, Channel 4 News, and Dave Allen at Large.

Of course, not all plain sailing in the Countdown department:

This lasted just 12 episodes IIRC before the favoured theme was retro-edited onto the rest of the batch (or maybe series?) done up to that point.

His finest piece of work IMHO:

Quote:The musician who wrote the theme tunes for Grange Hill, Countdown, and Channel 4 News has died aged 84.

Alan Hawkshaw was also a member of The Shadows, toured with the Rolling Stones, and was sampled by Jay-Z.

I’d have loved to have seen the KPM Allstars live - Alan Hawkshaw, Keith Mansfield et al.

Was this one of Alan’s as well? I can never seem to find any definite information on the original Channel 4 Racing theme.

How about a bit of a tongue-in-cheek cover of the Grandstand theme?

Slight point of order if I may - Grandstand was composed by Keith Mansfield, Alan Hawkshaw only performed it as part of the KPM All Stars. (Otherwise I might be tempted to link to the excellent Brett Domino cover).

I do wonder what Mr Hawkshaw made of the various parodies of the Countdown clock music 8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown have done over the years, notably by the Horne Section.

Anyone who grew up in the Midlands in the 80s will also instantly recognise another one of his library pieces:

Really saddened to hear of Alan Hawkshaw’s passing. Growing up in the 80s/90s, his music featured heavily in my childhood.

Some of his lesser known compositions used by ITN:

I remember ATV used that in some of its trailers for a while before it became the theme tune to Midlands Today. I seem to recall it being said that whoever was responsible for Midlands Today’s titles had moved over from ATV, and had liked the piece of music there, and so re-used it at the Beeb.
