Lack of usual autumn winter Saturday night ratings battle - Sweetcorn - 03-10-2021
Although xfactor on itv started to fade in 2016 it still created a Saturday night ratings battle with strictly on BBC one which added press reports and more focus to the shows .
Remember when the xfactor hour long results show at 8pm followed by Downton at 9pm dominated ratings on Sunday
The rest of the year when itv has masked singer or Britains got talent there is never a ratings battle as BBC one is weaker on Saturday nights.
Autumn into winter had all the ratings battle focus between big entertainment shows on itv and BBC ,
Now since the launch of this year's strictly probably up to the launch of this year's I'm a celebrity in November seems itv waving the white flag with a line up that clearly won't dent any of the strictly audience and looking at xfactor even the years it began to fade pulled in more autumn ratings than itvs current Saturday night line up now.
Seems tv channels now with online focus lacks any battle or attempt to challenge other shows I'm surprised after all these years strictly still the hit it is now ...but it has no ratings challenge at all. Why have battles between channel's stopped not just with entertainment but drama etc.
There must be big appetite from advertising for a big autumn winter Saturday night entertainment show on itv and without having any big sports rights to pay for itv must have the cash to invest. Even if it didn't beat strictly it could still get 6 million which would be better outcome than now with itv just waiting for I'm a celebrity to add decent Saturday night ratings .
Is strictly still a massive hit with added fact nothing else on at same time live so easy run?
What big entertainment formats would work against strictly in this autumn into winter Saturday night slot.
are there any formats from around the world now that would actually get some sort of ratings battle back ?
May be daft idea but if schedule it right with a good early lead in would an alternative celebrity dance show work say if it got established late August many weeks before strictly launch in Saturday night slot ? And a dance show not like dancing on ice but investment in a big celebrity line up to take part ?

ITV have tried multiple alternative dance shows over the years - they've never worked.
Yes, it's a shame the ratings battle isn't what it was and ITV do appear to have somewhat waved the white flag (what happened to Starstruck?) but after years of people moaning that ITV should show something other than The X Factor on Saturday night they actually are, and personally I think the line up of three quite different back to back gameshows on a Saturday night is very watchable and at the moment we're favouring it over Strictly, which at this stage can be recorded and watched within an hour with the aid of the fast forward button.
They do have Walk the Line coming up later in the autumn, and next week England are playing on Saturday night, although live football isn't the draw it once was outside of the big tournaments.

Go back to the 1970s, and for a large part of that decade ITV gave up on Saturday nights too, and handed it to BBC One, their offering was really dull, boring and not interesting. BBC One managed to create a very well codified Saturday night schedule, with the likes of Doctor Who, Basil Brush, Generation Game, Two Ronnies, Mike Yarwood, a US import, Match of the Day and rounding off the night Parkinson. All of which hammered ITV.
When ITV did try and compete, they nose dived in the ratings. Anyone remember Bruce's Big Night, launched in 1978 by LWT and utterly failed to bring a large regular audience to ITV.

Yes, I do. Someone in the old place posted a You Tube link to an entire clean copy of the show.
One successful programme that spun out of it as a freestanding entity was The Pyramid Game, with top drawer radio/TV presenter Steve Jones (No, not the same Steve Jones who does C4 F1! )

Nothing in the ITV schedule screams "Saturday Night" - not even the one with it in the title. Catchphrase is so dated and The Cube was cancelled before for a reason - people got fed up of it. Paul O'Grady was tried a decade ago and it didn't work because it was basically a daytime show bumped to primetime - ironically what Beat The Chasers is too.

Each to their own, but I’m enjoying the run of quiz shows and think that Paul’s show is in an interesting mix of chat and game show.

The mystery is where is Starstruck that appeared to be the quick replacement XF commission. It's filmed, it's supposed to be 6 x 75 minute episodes plus a 90 minute final. So perhaps it's coming along after The Cube & Beat the Chasers as I don't see where it fits in January.
Catchphrase was doing really well earlier this year, the best in this era's 8 year run so seems to have got a big commission this time around.

The Starstruck thing is a bit baffling as like others have said it was supposed to fill some X Factor slots. Perhaps they don’t fancy risking a new format against Strictly but I think eventually you have to bite the bullet rather than just wave the white flag.
And there’s no room for it early next year, they’re already packed with Ant & Dec’s Limitless Win and the delayed 1% Club joining The Masked Singer, The Voice, Dancing on Ice, Saturday Night Takeaway and later, Britain’s Got Talent. So unless they’re going to sit on it until next June (and in which case, they might as well have aired it in the Summer just gone as it was filmed in April) it’s going to have to turn up at some point this year. Problem is that Strictly is now so well into its stride that another talent show might stand little chance. Walk the Line is apparently going to be stripped across a week so avoids the issue, but Starstruck doesn’t sound like a stripped format (and I can’t imagine them stripping two singing formats so close together, especially with Voice Kids at Christmas also coming).

Perhaps Starstruck isn't the smash hit that some expected it to be? Even though it needed a rest, The X Factor was capable of pulling in 6 million viewers. There have been a number of "copycat" formats that haven't hit the mark in recent times and even if done properly, Stars In Their Eyes would fail to get those figures. Starstruck seems like another Your Face Sounds Familiar in that it will merely do OK.

Just on Bruce Forsyth's Big Night in 1978, I have seen the first edition tape on YouTube, and it appears Big Night was not live, it was all recorded for Saturday transmission. I just assumed it was a live event, but no, it was recorded in advance. Interesting.

Saw some of Paul O’Grady’s new show the other week. I thought it was awful. It wasn’t him , it was rigid and I didn’t care much for the games and celebs. Paul needs an audience to bounce off of!

There are still quite a lot of people who don’t record or use catch up services and simply miss programmes when they clash so they are still ratings battles. There was a letter in one of the TV magazines complaining that it was criminal Endeavour and Vigil were airing at the same time when so much of the schedules are repeats. Seems like they don’t realise the majority of people record or use catch-up now a days so have missed Endeavour as a result.

I do think it is frustrating that in those cases often premium dramas don't get a narrative repeat whilst most factual will, so if you can't watch later for whatever reason, or simply miss it and want to record a repeat, you do miss out.

ITV tend to offer a narrative repeat of a lot of the 60 minute dramas (through less this year) but don’t for the 120 minute ones. The BBC have never do narrative repeats except for those getting BSL.
