BBC Countdowns Current - Newsroom - 12-08-2021

Excuse me if this has been discussed in any other thread but I've looked and can't find..

Has anyone ever managed to capture or see a full 90 second countdown of the version we've been seeing since the move to NBH? I've only ever seen it start at 84, 83 seconds. Of course we all know this happens before the Ten on the NC and it's always the same Countdown.

The full NINETY was shown quite frequently back in the day but in almost 10 years, I have failed to see it start at 90 seconds. I've trawled YouTube and can only come across mocks (of course). Just wondered whether there was a reason it never commences at 90 seconds or before. Even when the extended filler is played out for over 2 mins it never seems to fall into the full 90 second countdown.

Simply curious as to whether anyone else may have caught this rarity.

Oh, and for the younger people here - this is what I mean by the full 90.

Sorry, Newsroom, I can't help you with that one. I just wanted to say how freaking good that original 1999 90" countdown was. I absolutely adored it and, for me at least, it has never been bettered. I was mesmerised by it.

BBC Countdowns Current - Rolling News - 12-08-2021

As far as I know, the longest countdown I’ve ever seen since 2013 is 85 seconds. I can only imagine it’s due to simulcasts and it not being able to start at 00:00 bang on like in 1999-2003, which is why there’s sometimes a few seconds pause after the countdown hits 00:00.

Oh I agree Rob! My friends thought I was weird to not want not leave their apartment or mine until it finished.

Just peculiar not one person had captured the 90sec since moving to NBH.

I've managed to find this Newsroom - seems to be the full version as posted by the person who originally created it for the BBC in 2013. Interestingly enough, it appears that the full countdown only starts from 87".

Thanks Rob, I can always rely on you for that era. Unfortunately it’s not what I’m after:

I honestly don’t believe the full 90 sec has been aired?

There isn’t one, I don’t think. 87s worth since 2008 - the full countdown has no numbers overlaid

Actually, the full 90 second one (from what I know it starts at 87" and has a 3 second break after it hits zero, thus making it 90") has aired once. Here's the recording I made back in 2019 (apologies for the poor quality, I recorded it on my iPad).

This is an interesting theory. However, there has forever been a fair few seconds of hold showing the beams crossing the forecourt at NBH until it just stops before the shot of presenter (usually News at Ten) which would make it even longer than 90 seconds if working to your theory.

We need an insider to clear up this minuscule but bothersome question. Wink

I don't think that's correct. I remember being annoyed for weeks after the new countdowns launched that zero didn't equal the top of the hour, as it previously had.

Would you indulge us with your ideas? It’s like a fly you can’t quite swat!

I just don’t understand how the overlay of graphics begin at 87, it makes no sense? If the NC had nothing to go to at 95 seconds to air then surely they’d go to a countdown at 90.

IIRC, there was a countdown that was 90 seconds but the overlay didn’t kick in until 60 seconds.

I know that the music was very awkwardly aligned to the visuals between 2008-2010, but from May 2010 onwards when a new music track was added the final beat was once more on zero, however it then faded into the ident.

I believe that Chris Cook shared a low-res version of the 90" August 2011 countdown some time ago, which indeed has no numbers until the 60 second point, occurring exactly 30 seconds into the video, which would make it the final set of countdowns that did run for atleast 90 seconds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqLI-io6_TU

I love that countdown, but there others showing John Simpson cowering to the explosion/beat.

Again, I’d love to know why the BBC went for a 30 second lead on and then overlayed the seconds.

Forever fishing. itsrobert

Something I've always felt and like about the pre-2013 countdowns is that they feel a lot more "real", in that they seem to have a focus on the stories and people around as well as the journalists. Perhaps it's also that odd vignette filter that makes it all feel a lot more "at the scene", and the footage feel like it's being taken whilst a report is being made. Then again, perhaps that's because the world has overall gotten relatively much more peaceful since the mid-2000s, although it does all seem to be kicking off again. :/

The current countdowns seem to be much more focused on the journalists and technical behind the scenes, but not so much on the area or the people around which they are reporting. It also feels too polished like the journalists are doing what they're doing specifically for the countdown.

I'm not sure what you mean about my ideas? But the duration issue is easy. The file duration is 90 seconds. It starts playing at xx:58:30. There are three seconds of no time at the end. That means the 90 second file starts with the clock at 87 seconds. Or am I missing something?

If the channel has nothing to go to at 95 seconds to the TOTH, then something has gone seriously wrong with the junction timing and an extra 30 second promo should be inserted so that the countdown starts in vision around 65 seconds to air.
