Local adverts on Virgin Media - Pete - 19-06-2021
So the other day I saw an advert for TSPC (Tayside Solicitors Property Service) on Channel 5. This piqued my interest slightly as
1 - I thought Channel 5 had ditched local adverts
2 - I thought C5 only used LEMNUS regions and TPSC is really only relevant for the south of Grampian let alone all of Scotland.
I've just seen it again on MTV and am now curious as to whether this is some sort of clever thing where the ads are being inserted at the Dundee headend for Virgin.

I think this is to do with Virgin adopting Sky's AdSmart system which inserts local adverts over the top of the national/network feed.
It's not perfect - sometimes it seems to be a second late so you get a bit of the national advert, and it cuts off a bit of the next ad.
Also Sky's channels have for a few years had Virgin-specific adverts for their own shows or services.

Yep. No point saying "To add Sky Sports to your package, phone Sky" when you need to phone Virgin instead (or these days, go online or do it through the box)

Yes - the Viacom owned channels, including C5, use Sky's Adsmart, and this is now used on Virgin Media (has been for almost two years).

I've seen an advert for a local company pop up when watching Sky Living several times. I did think it was bizarre they'd be advertising nationally, so this explains it.

It's a shame AdSmart can't be used on NOW, but I suspect it'd be too complex, even if it's possible to slot in commercials using IP numbers.

C5 only ever had four terrestrial TV ad regions on their analogue network, all the analogue transmitters (except Croydon for the London area) were fed four streams via satellite, and any stream could be selected to be transmitted by any transmitter or group of transmitters. In other words they could if required just target an individual area with a specific ad. I don't know how often, if at all that facility was dynamically used? I can't remember exactly what the default regions were?
When they were on the SDN mux, I think there were only two or three different versions of that, notably a Welsh version to cater for S4C?

IP addresses don't tie you to a specific location. whatismyip.com in its default state thinks I'm in London. And unless Midlands Today/Central News had had a major range boost, I know that is not right

Which is why they (can) personalise /localise pre and post roll ads.

I’m finding the above is now the case when listening to commercial radio stations on an App or a smart speaker, more so if you’re signed in with an account. There was a day last week I was listening to LBC and a very local advert for Meerkat Meals appeared offering 2 for 1 at a pub half a mile from where I live. It threw me back as a bit as LBC’s advert are usually national. I wouldn’t be too surprised if we see more of this type of advertising on connected devices in the future.

Didn't realise Virgin had taken the system too. What you describe reminds me a little of the analogue cable days when the local provider would occasionally play a local company or their own adverts over the top of a trail on the live feed - there's some examples on YouTube.
I think I've seen mention of a signal in the VBI triggering them. Needless to say it was hardly ever seamless, and as often was in and/or out with a non-sync cut.

Yes, I noticed it on the Manchester feed of Radio X(where the only difference is ads anyway) where some of them are replaces with ads targeted at Liverpool, where I live. Although some of these could go out in Manchester, some of them are too local to go out on FM in Manchester.
I’ve heard similar targeted advertising on Global Radio podcasts.
