The Sky One Thread - OldSkoollCITV - 15-06-2021

I’m starting the thread for the Sky One channel. With Sky having a genre based channels, Sky One looks like a sore thumb. Since the rebrand from Sky 1, all of the pre-watershed light entertainment stuff has gone and looking more like the Dave clone. Sky doesn’t know what to do with the once great channel.

Oh hey Paul.

To be honest, Sky One has changed as an entertainment channel as a whole. It's no longer Sky's main focus, despite it being a reasonably rated channel with it's biggest hit The Simpsons still keeping the channel afloat (for how long until Disney pulls the rug under Sky's nose, who knows when). By then, Sky will have already had it's own programming to place to still give Sky One a prevalance.

But with Sky going for all these genre channels, I can still see a place for Sky One, I'd love to see it make more live programming or be the new Saturday night channel considering that NBCUniversal, the Comcast department that owns their channels, could easily put SNL on Sky One on Saturdays and promote the Sunday broadcast a day later on Sky Comedy.

And with kids content now cropping up on the channel, I could see Sky maybe, just maybe, launching a linear kids channel if they need to. That's if they need to, not because some people demand it. I don't see it happening because of the success of POP, Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon, so that's probably out of the window and fantasies of that fade away like sawdust on a chalkboard.

I'm sure I have seen it said that as part of Sky's long standing agreement with Nickelodeon, they are not allowed to launch their own linear kids channel

The trouble with Sky One is that, other than The Simpsons, the whole thing is so inconsistent.
Schedule is unpredictable and unmemorable.

Wish they’d give it a proper schedule - and make it free to air. Make it ‘Channel 6’ in all but name.
Develop a decent soap, bring back the Sky News Break updates, have a nightly uk talk/comedy show. Make it clear when they’re showing new Simpsons. Have some original must watch prime time shows and fill the rest with repeats from other Sky channels.

Feels very watered down now with Atlantic, Comedy, Documentaries, Art and History.

Make it the flagship showcase.

Make it free to air? So you think they should put it on Freeview?

The Sky One Thread - nwtv2003 - 16-06-2021

The thing with Sky One is that sometimes the schedule shows like they don’t know what to do with it. Which is a shame as some of the original produced content is very good. But it sits alongside what feels like a showcase for other Sky channels. I can’t imagine The Simpsons dominating the Sky One schedule forever either. More so when Sky can’t even get on demand rights.

Plus, putting out the Kardashians in peak time?!? No thank you.

I think that Sky should swap 'Sky Arts' with 'Sky One' and make it Free-to-air.

They'd then have a pretty decent EPG slot and could act as a direct competitor to ITV.

They'd be able to provide news bullitens like the BBC or ITV with no extra cost by simply simulcasting several hours with the Sky News Channel.

Sky News Breakfast: 06:00-09:00

Sky News Today: 13:00-14:00

Sky News Tonight: 19:00-20:00

Sky News at Ten: 22:00-22:30

Then they could use Sky One as a place to put the best of the content from other channels.

If they did go free to air, the channel sacrificed would probably be Pick, not Sky Arts. Pick used to be Sky 3, so there's no point it being there if Sky One is.

Yes.
It’s not really performing as a premium channel now.
It just about has enough legacy as a brand to gain a large audience as free-to-view.
It only needs investment in 7-10pm hours, as I said, the rest of the schedule could be made up of repeats from across the Sky portfolio. And yes, close Pick.
Have kids programmes in the morning, perhaps a little news simulcasting and I think a regular weekdays late night chat/comedy show at 10pm would be a good offer.

Sky is a pay-tv operator. They are hardly likely to give away their main channel, and would make a huge loss if it were free to air.

Do they have free to air rights to their main acquired programmes? I didn't think they did to The Simpsons for example.

Wasn’t this the point of Pick?

Initially yes. Until they got rid of Bravo and moved a load of content from it to Pick, so that went out the window pretty quick. Now it looks obsessed with cop shows in the daytime.

It’s not their main channel anymore though is it? It’s been Atlantic for some years.
Simpsons rights will be interesting come renewal time.

The Sky One Thread - JAS84 - 17-06-2021

Yeah, sorry to say, but both Sky and Channel 4 might have to say goodbye to Homer and Bart when their current contracts expire. Sad

And it's true, Sky Atlantic is the flagship channel nowadays.

The Sky One Thread - OldSkoollCITV - 17-06-2021

I think Fox/Disney’s failure to buy Sky paid the price for the Sky One brand, they could have merged the Fox UK channel with Sky One to make a stronger Sky One channel like a British FX. Maybe the Disney kids channels could’ve also stayed on air but with the ‘Disney’ brand dropped for Sky.

I think Sky One stopped being an important pay entertainment channel the day they launched Sky Atlantic as well as took over Living (now Sky Witness). After they stopped the ‘Sky 1’ phrase, it had become heavily focused on Dave and Bravo type shows to be ahead in the fragmented market. I can see Sky One being revamped, rejigged and revitalised once they let go of The Simpsons rights.
