Random question about Breakfast time weather in 1989 - Newsdog - 30-05-2021
According to the Radio Times from 1989, after the flintstones at 630am there was a weather forecast at 6.55am before Breakfast time starts at 7am. Now if I remember at this time Breakfast time weather was separate from the main BBC weather centre with different presenters ( normally Francis Wilson) and graphics.
I am guessing the 6:55am weather would come from the breakfast time studio (rather than the main weather studio). Does anyone know if the CA introduced breakfast time after this weather report or did the weather forecast introduce Breakfast time?

Weather report introduced by CA and then at the end of it a short breakfast time sting played over the forecast. Then a brief local weather op from the midlands and then back to the CA in London to introduce Breakfast time.

Talking about the weather on Breakfast time wasn’t there a row with the met office when it first started as they were not using the met office employed forecasters? I believe Francis had to get his weather data from elsewhere ?

Whatever satellite software he was using on Breakfast Time ended up on Sky News when he moved there too. Was always quite ugly looking in the late 90's. I imagine it was the height of technology in the mid-80s though?

Francis’s animated satellite maps on BBC Breakfast Time weather were totally revolutionary when it started. Remember that all other forecasts were stills or were presented in a studio with magnetic symbols stuck onto the maps with the presenter walking between Atlantic, today and tomorrow (or whatever had been setup).

The Flintstones airing at 6.30am was a decision by the BBC to try and soften the start of their breakfast schedules. Viewers had complained that the revamped BBC Breakfast Time from November 1986 was far too heavy and news focused for a morning, compared to the light and fluff served on TV-am, which trounced BBC One in ratings at this time.
The 6.30am offerings were always appalling - Edgar Kennedy, Leon Errol. The Flintstones was at least entertaining at 6.30am.

Judging from the map, I assume that local forecast was for the West Midlands and there was a separate opt out in this era for the East Midlands? I thought the East Midlands opt wasn’t established until 1991?

1991 was when EMT started as a fully split 6.30 but according to TV Ark there had been split shorter bulletins before this.

Yes, Francis' forecasts were supplied by Imperial College as the Met Office refused to supply them because it wasn't Francis' "turn" to do TV. I don't know what they did when he was on holiday and the regular forecasters did them.
