I was about to go to bed then saw this. Wow. That's incredibly sad. I can't understate the size of the part Rainbow played in my childhood, as it did any kid born in the 80s. Their spinoff show was also superb.

Jane and Freddy married only fairly recently, after being together since the 80s - ironically after Jane and Rod had divorced.

As I said on the Playdays thread only the other week, they were incredibly talented writers and some of their songs were almost wasted on kids TV as they were that good.

I knew they were all of old age now but the trio were as much a part of my growing-up as Geoffrey Hayes was.

A sad day but he left behind such a legacy as one third of a children's television legend.

No prizes for guessing the biggest revelation I’ve learned from this thread! I really had no idea.

RIP, Freddy.

Old age? They're all about the same age, 72. Which isn't particularly old considering the average lifespan in this country is 78. Geoffrey Hayes was 76 when he died, and he was seven years older.

Of course history could have been so different. The original line-up involved Matthew Corbett who later left them to go and work with Sooty when his father Harry retired from doing that. But Wiki suggests Freddy wrote scripts for Playdays and The Sooty Show, as well as the later Wizadora.

In between Matthew and Freddy it was Rod, Jane and Roger. Roger being Roger Walker, most famous now for being in Eldorado

Weekday afternoons. ten past 12. Home from school. That familiar drum and whistle intro. Memories we should savour. People we should savour. RIP Freddy.

Wow, now that is a revelation. I only know about that lineup from THAT Christmas tape skit, didn't know he was Roger Walker who went onto play Bunny.

Yes - coming home for lunch from Morpeth Road Primary School in Blyth for my Mam to give me dinner when Rainbow was on followed by The Sullivans (in the Tyne Tees area, at least).

And then back to school.

If I recall correct on Anglia the 12.10pm programmes included.
- Rosie and Jim
- Rainbow
- Rod, Jane, and Freddy

I do vaguely recall Rod, Jane, and Freddy touring theatres with their show, and I think I may even have a programme tucked away in my scrapbook in the attic from when I saw them as a child. As their TV show was supposed to be set in a theatre I guess taking it to actual theatres was a fairly easy do to in terms of material.

In the early 90s it used to be...
Monday - Playbox (CEN) later Rosie and Jim (CEN)
Tuesday - Rod, Jane and Freddy (THS)
Wednesday - Allsorts (GRA)
Thursday - The Riddlers (YTV)
Friday - Rainbow (THS)

After September 1993 the preschool slot moved to 3:30pm. Shows included Wizadora, Alphabet Castle, an awful reboot of Rainbow by HTV and Tots TV.

Puddle Lane and I think Greensleeves used to air in that slot too.

Certainly in the 80s, each of the big four companies tended to have an allocated day of the week for their children’s programmes, so on any given day, the chances were that both the 12pm and 12.10pm programmes were made by the same company. Not always though. Both shows would always be networked via one company due to the very short junction (10-15 seconds) between them.

Rainbow was always shown twice a week, with new episodes on a Friday and repeats (approx two years old) on a Wednesday, and later Tuesday.

Other 12.10pm shows from this era included Let’s Pretend (CEN), Once Upon a Time (GRA), Get up and Go!/Mooncat and Co (YTV) and in the very early 80s Pipkins (ATV) and Daisy Daisy (a updated version of Hickory House) from GRA.

ISTR that Rod, Jane and Freddy was originally a ten-minute programme shown at 12pm. Mondays to Thursdays the 10-minute show always got an encore at 4pm once CITV launched in 1983, but on Fridays the 12.10 episode of Rainbow got the encore instead.

There was also Let's Pretend and Tickle On The Tum. (God I feel so old!)
