Sat next to him at the bar in The Mullberry Bush pub (opposite London Studios/LWT/Kent House etc) one lunchtime 21ish  years ago. Yep, nice, non assuming chap. RIP Dennis

Was famously spoofed in Little Britain (this from the Live Show):

And later appeared on Comic Relief Does Little Britain Live alongside David Walliams' depiction of him, but that doesn't appear to be on YouTube.

Am I right in saying that Minder was a vehicle for Dennis Waterman after The Sweeney ceased production? Both were produced by Euston Films (Thames).

According to Wikipedia it was:

Sad to hear about Dennis Waterman although whenever I thought of him, I think of Little Britain's 'Write the theme tune, Sing the theme tune'

RE: Dennis Waterman has died. - Humphrey Hacker - 08-05-2022

He didn’t have a bad voice. He sang the theme tune to Minder, On The Up and New Tricks.

With Minder he wrote the theme tune, sang the theme tune.

"It's alright, it's okay, doesn't really matter if you're old and grey".....loved him on New Tricks. RIP Mr Waterman.

Had to mention one of the most out of place TOTP performances ever. The audience didn't quite know what to make of it

That theme song is so odd, they clearly wanted to use "End of the Line" by the Traveling Wilburys but couldn't for some reason, so ended up making that shameless rip off.

Would be far from the only TV show that's had to use a bad cover version or written their own similar song because of rights issues though!

Now I'm reminded of those shops that use bad cover versions as background music rather than the originals (like B&Q did for years), and you spend your whole time in the shop distracted because it's a sort of aural uncanny valley.

You're absolutely right. Interestingly, the pilot episode of New Tricks shown about a year before the series did indeed feature a cover version of "End of the Line" performed by Dennis Waterman.

I guess even that was too expensive to clear for the series to use long term, hence the "loving tribute" that they ended up using.

Plus the series Stay Lucky too! I don’t think there were any more, but the Little Britain joke wasn’t entirely unwarranted! All good themes though
