ITV xmas ident 1990 - Robertclark125 - 27-03-2022

Hi. Below is a video, taken from ITV in 1990, over the festive period. Although the programme is about looking at where the money raised in Telethon 90 went to, I'm more interested in the xmas ITV ident preceding it. Was this the first time a generic ITV ident was used in this way, outwith industrial action, such as in 1979? And, did all regions use this, or only some of them? Note the announcer refers to ITV, not to LWT, Anglia etc.

That's one of my videos, so I can 100% say it's from Yorkshire!

What year was it that they turned the triangle of the logo into Christmas trees? That was such a clever idea

In the 70s and 80s the 'Big Five' companies would often take turns producing national promotion packages.

If ATV or YTV were producing the package, they'd often tweak the 'ITV' version jingles and VOs, to produce a 'local' version

Christmas 1997, in a tree-hunting game in association with the charity. A clever spin on the 8-year-old symbol indeed, with the creative space of the triangle achieved further than, dare I say, some of the regional variations.

The Thames/ITV variations of festive promo come to mind. I think the practice died off after 1993, with TTTV being the last?

STV would do the same thing with the 2009 logo, flipping it over as a Christmas tree.

Seeing companies realise they can flip their logo to be a symbol in and of itself is clever and creates ingenious seasonal hype.

Channel 4 have done that too, by mirroring the left half of their usual logo.

It was done a lot earlier than that. I just went to try and find it and to answer my own question, it was the first year of that logo: Christmas 1989:

That was 1995, wasn't it? The final christmas before the original idents were dropped, they had half the symbol mirrored 4 times to look like a christmas tree, with a star on top.

I didn't know exactly which year, but yes, it was when the original blocks were still use, so that'll be the one I was thinking of.

Oh, I haven't seen that use case before. Really shows how flexible the triangle alone can be though.

It certainly beats BBC Two’s miserable triangle Christmas Tree from 1987.

I like the solitary bit of red.

Is it meant to represent something or is it a graphical error?
