Apologies if I’ve put this in the wrong place but having travelled a fair bit in the last few weeks for the first time in a few years, I’ve been struck by quite how many hotels had RT on their systems. Obviously it’s no longer available but would this have been a conscious choice or was there some sort of lobbying going on to put it there (or indeed has money changed hands?) I can see the point of having a Russian language channel for Russian speaking guests but RT surely doesn’t add very much. Over the last five years, I’m pretty sure it was just as likely that a hotel would offer RT as it would BBC World News.
CGTN appears to be in a similar position, at least outside the UK.
So I guess my question is, how do hotels decide which channels to take and do broadcasters lobby for placement? I recall CNN partners hotels being a thing previously which may have been part of this?

I don't think there is anything in it, it is a hotel which wants to cater to all guests. The more news channels it has from around the world the better.

When I visited Singapore for a special event, the hotel that I'm staying in only have the "basics", like BBC World News, Euronews and those free sports channels (the one that rarely airs big sports events).

CNN has 'partner hotels' (as well as partner air and cruise lines) that (presumably) pay them to be able to broadcast CNN:

They are notorious, and have been for decades, for promoting their availability in certain hotels, so much so that The Day Today parodied it in the 90s.

When I was in Brussels a few years ago they had channels from many different European countries, including the UK. I don’t know if they were taken from the local cable system. If so, it was presumably due to Brussels being home to so many EU institutions.

Looking at the channel list from VOO, which is one of two cable providers in Belgium, they offer channels from The Netherlands, Germany, a sprinkle of channels from France (not TF1 or France 2/3 due to Belgian channels getting first run rights to their shows), some of which are Belgium variants, Germany, Italy and the UK. The British channels are BBC One, Two and World News, presumably they're due to a long standing agreement as One and Two have been available in Belgium and the Netherlands since the 1970s.
Switzerland is the best place to visit if you want to watch UK channels in hotels due to a local law that allows rebroadcast of FTA channels from neighbouring countries as long as they can be received in the country. You can be in Geneva, Lausanne or Zurich and watch ITV, C4, C5 etc as if you live in the UK.

Last time I went to hotel in Kaohsiung I could get RFA, Rai Italia, TVE, NHK World and RT. It was before war in Ukraine so I don’t know if they have dropped RT.

When CNN International first launched in Europe in 1985 it wasn't openly available on cable providers, it was only available in hotels, and was made available to EBU broadcasters for source footage and info that could be used in their news coverage. CNN International eventually opened up to the general public in 1987. The Dorchester Hotel in London was the first hotel to sign up to the CNN International service.

I've often wondering how quite a high number of hotels in Amsterdam and also France carry BBC 1 and BBC2 but not BBC NC. Instead they take BBC World News and no CNN. I therefore wonder how it is possible for them to gain access to BBC 1 and 2 if outside of the UK. I mean, I know how to do it from a personal perspective wherever I am, but it would have to involve a supplier surely?

It's possibly the cheapest subscription on the market at £1.99 a month and even cheaper if you fork out £20 for the year. I'm pretty sure they're doing very well with that subscription. Also, the adverts that appear on the network are mostly luxury, high end end brands that have the money to spend on an international news channel.

Well I did not know that. I'm wondering how hotels in France managed to get them.
