Katty Kay is returning to the BBC - Jeff - 04-03-2022

It's been announced that Katty Kay is returning to the BBC as a US Special Correspondent for BBC Studios. Quoting from the announcement press release:

Quote:In her new role, Katty will host TV documentaries from both the US and Europe, present her own podcast series and write a weekly column for bbc.com/news. She'll also front occasional BBC news coverage of major events, including the US midterm elections. Her first documentary project will focus on the fate of democracy in the United States.

Katty’s projects will appear on the BBC’s international platforms, including BBC.com, the BBC News App and World News, plus BBC Select and BBC Podcasts, which are exclusive to North America. They will also be available in the UK on BBC Sounds, the BBC’s domestic TV channels and BBC iPlayer.

I wonder if she’ll eventually join Christian on Context?

Great news. Sounds like she'll basically be a US David Dimbleby.

That’s great news. She’s a brilliant broadcaster and journalist. I hoped she would find her way back to the BBC after the job she left to do didn’t work out.

Does this mean Katty will appear regularly in news coverage, or not so much?

The article mentions her as a “US Special Correspondent for BBC Studios, working across documentaries, podcasts and news” but doesn’t actually mentions BBC News? It also includes a quote from the BBC Studios CEO and information on them but again nothing on BBC News?

I thought this was a bit odd but I suppose it depends on her role? Her new role/new deal may be more about documentaries and just occasionally appearances on BBC News?

I also wondered if this may be down to money/earnings which while I won’t get into (as it is of not interest to me and shouldn’t be to anyone else), I know in the past there has been the mention of the separation between “the BBC” and their “commercial arm” when salaries etc. are published each year.

It clearly says she'll be anchoring major events such as the Midterms (this year). So you should expect to be seeing her very soon.

Yes - it was just more the fact the press release was through BBC Studios I was meaning. Good to see her back nonetheless!

This feels like a role created to facilitate her return rather than replacing any existing role.

Christian Fraser did hint when launching Context, plans were underway to make her one of the panellists

If the BBC want to continue Americast without Maitlis and Sopel, she would be an obvious choice.

Christian and Katty reunited on Americast (with the Zurch) would make sense. Though the release says Katty will front her own, new podcast series, so I wouldn’t get your hopes up. I am interested to see if they keep Americast going though, given it’s popularity.

I think it’s clear Katty wanted a new challenge when she left, and this provides a way for her to both return and try something new.
