Prince Philip has Died - RDJ - 11-04-2021

Oddly this video posted on the BBC’s YouTube channel has Martine’s announcement accompanied presumably by the Obit version of the graphics.

I seem to recall they did something similar for a breaking news story in the past. As it was showing repeats, the best thing for it to do was to simulcast BBC News.
As "politics" was suspended within half an hour of the announcment I imagine had Parliament been in session it would have ended pretty swiftly, perhaps after some initial tributes on the floor. I'm sure they have a protocol to follow as well, as we'll see on Monday where it is deemed necessary for MPs to return to Parliament to give tribute rather than issue them from their constituency.

Prince Philip has Died - Roger Darthwell - 11-04-2021

I was watching a youtube video on microsoft edge, I briefly clicked the chrome window, and I saw it as a breaking news alert on my chrome extension, after that I immediately turned on the TV, first on BBC1 then on ITV

I wonder why BBC News used their usual on screen graphics instead of the Obit ones

I got a text off a friend that the Duke had died and went to check Twitter to see if he was being genuine. I ran to switch on BBC One and found they hadn't broken the news, nor had ITV, but saw that BBC Two were running the story. It's a minor point, but as a pres geek, it was certainly something I don't think I've seen before and might not see again, fully expecting a network to break a major news story as it happens.
Yes I thought this too- was always expecting I would probably miss the announcement and have to watch it back later. But in fact I got a phone notification, went to News Channel and saw they were in breaking news mode, was able to flick to ITV and see Eamonn break in and hand to ITN, and then go to BBC One and see the fade to black and formal announcement all happening live!!

Also the main change from what we have seen before on BBC channels was I think the fade to black and then all networks join News Channel- who provided the black News Report slide themselves with the news channel presenter doing the "We are interrupting programmes..." announcement, rather than this coming from BBC One pres as seemed to be the case before. On this occasion it made little difference of course because Two was already simulcasting News and Four was not on air, but you can see that this is a safer solution in any case- and also neatly sidesteps the lack of appropriate idents/slides in the Oneness package!

Also regarding BBC Radio, the solution suggested upthread is a good one for the future- a suitable time after the news breaking the pop music stations 1/1X/2/6 should really break off to their own programme with a suitable playlist, senior presenter (e.g. Jo Whiley would be my first choice) and production team to ensure all goes smoothly. I can see the problem that there just isn't the resources to run an altered schedule on all stations with potentially inexperienced presenters etc, but the formal news output for such a long period on all the music stations did seem inappropriate.

Lots of nasty comments on Twitter as we have come to expect but lots praising her too
Well not really, in response to that anyway. Just one dig at Kay Burley and one quipping "Who died". Everything else is people being overwhelmingly positive or genuinely interested in the procedure - well, the fashion element of it anyway.

Some more

"its called doing your job"
"it’s not about you"
"Come off it. A 99 year old bloke who's been ill for a while dying is not a 9/11 moment as much as you might want it to be"
"Who cares...."
"Drama queen"
"He was not a God. Get over it."
"It's not about you love, yeah." - I like her Kay like response here where she says "It’s my Twitter feed, yeah"
"‘A 99 year old billionaire aristocrat is dead’. - Not that hard - Thumb sucking mawkishness aside"
"Will you forget the weight of announcing many thousands of deaths where the loved ones said goodbye via iPad or not at all? The DoE died with his wife with him" (I call this whataboutism where no matter what someone posts about some says what about x y or z) of course she will remember the grim duty of announcing deaths daily for a year
"if we get a comment from kay it'll be all the rule breakers together !?" - that is the one Brekkie refers too in his reply to me when Beth Rigby says "you handled the weight of that moment with true professionalism & poise"

& some more odd ones
"Why don't they have mourning shroud on hand in the studio so we know what you are announcing than worrying if you are suffering from a bout of indigestion for a few moments".
"Jose Mourinho did it without any rehearsals"

but yes most people are praising her but why do people feel the need to pile in every time with negativity

I too was interested in the situation with the black clothing, Does every presenter keep an outfit there specifically for them or do they have black suits in all different sizes ready so a presenter can just grab one when needed?
That's tame compared to some things I saw.
Someone accused Chris Ship of having no clue about race relations (stopping just short of calling him a racist - how that's relevant I don't know but whatever) and the other one that stuck in my head I daren't repeat because it's possibly the most vile and sickening sentence I've ever read.

Only because protocol was fully broken by the royal family tweeting the news first! Will be really surprised if that happens next time though.

Could somebody explain the protocol to me please. I was under the impression that every major broadcaster would be given some form of advance notice under embargo, and as a result, every station would broadcast the news at the same time. However, it ended up feeling like most news organisations were caught on the back foot.

From my perspective, I received a Sky News notification as I was walking to work, and my first thought was that finger trouble had struck again 19 years later. As such, I flicked on LBC News and there was no sign of any info from them, so I switched to BBC Radio 2 and again, there was nothing. I ended up going back and forth for another few minutes before LBC News started their coverage. Based on what had been said about the plans previously, I would have expected everything to be a lot more synchronous.

I have notifications on for the Press Association on Twitter and found out from there as they broke the story at 12:01. This was at least a minute before anyone else picked up on the story so felt pretty bizarre.

I have no insight, but the same assumption as you that there would be a short embargo for media organisations to prepare, before the news was announced near simultaneously.

Prince Philip has Died - Brekkie - 11-04-2021

I think logically news this important would unlikely be deemed the sort of news that should be embargoed, especially for a significant amount of time.

Those are not obit graphics. The galleries output various feeds with different flavours of graphics (e.g. BBC News and BBC World News versions) and this is a version with no ticker, no BBC News logo and no red 'breaking news' graphics, it was the same with the previous set of graphics. Quite often seen in online clips, not entirely sure what the reason for its existence is, someone might be able to fill us in on that.

I think it's a different feed to the tickerless one used by BBC One for the national bulletins.

I turned on Tweet notifications of the Royal Family account. At 12:02 I began to record BBC One, Two and News right after seeing the notification.

Will the next major royal death announcement came up first from Twitter again?

Prince Philip has Died - richard110888 - 11-04-2021

Who would have thought that just 2 weeks into this forums existence that we would already have got a 100 page discussion

I don't think anyone else has mentioned this but did anyone find the wording of the statement sounded a bit odd? The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. I noticed over the course of the day that a few presenters seemed to pause before reading that line as if to say am I reading this right or is it a typo?. We are so used to hearing Prince Philip or The Duke of Edinburgh

Prince Philip has Died - Run_Telecine - 11-04-2021

As with some others, I was really surprised to hear that it was the Royal Family who broke with protocol and tweeted the News first. I'd always thought (from having read some very detailed memos on the subject dictating EXACTLY how broadcasters were going to deliver the News) that there would be an embargoed alert to the News Agencies and Broadcasters to give them time to prepare and give radio/TV stations a clock time to hand over to Network at.

It felt very strange to see BBC News (which I had on in the background at work) deliver Breaking News before BBC1 had joined them. Once the News has broken on Twitter, they probably have no choice but to break it themselves immediately. The Royal Family account possibly shouldn't have tweeted the News, given how the Broadcasters have such strict protocols in place.
