I'm no great fan of the BBC, but I certainly don't expect it to be broadcasting something of interest to me all the time. If it isn't when I want to watch TV, I just watch something else, as it appears do most other people, looking at their ratings, and as I did last night.

What's more, in no possible scenario would I think last night's programming decisions by the BBC are an issue either for the government or their regulator. I would prefer the government to be kept well away from any day to day management of the BBC.

The BBC may not get every thing right, but allowing governments to meddle in BBC management decisions is a recipe for disaster.

Well, I don't expect the BBC to have something of interest at any given moment of the day either, and there are some days where I consume nothing of theirs. I don't have a problem with that.

However, Friday night was rather like walking into Sainsburys and finding they had replaced everything on the shelves with only fruit and veg

Friday was one of those events that occur on average once every decade or so. It doesn't matter in isolation. However to my mind it did rather expose the old Reithian mind set of 'we're going to give you what we say is good for you'

More broadly, they (due to multiple factors not of their making) seem to have more bandwidth allocated to them, than they can use efficiently now.

From around Midnight until Noon on weekdays they have three national TV streams, but at any even moment are only running two distinct services. OK, that's not prime time hours, but they will start simulcasting BBC 1 and the NC at the drop of a hat. The CV19 conferences being a regular example. I don't like it very much, that's all. Be glad I'm not Ofcom 8-)

It's odd how there's one set of people who are expecting total disruption to the schedules for a week... and another who are very annoyed about one day of disruption! :?

I don't think there's any 'protocol' or rules about what will or won't be shown, it's up to the common sense and editorial judgement of those who are in charge of scheduling and channels at the time.

Topical comedy probably won't get a look in. I suspect HIGNFY and The News Quiz won't happen this week, but that's mainly because they wouldn't want to touch the main story. Everything else would be assessed according to merit

iPlayer content are in 50fps, but 720p only.
Is it? It's always got that film look for me.

It's platform dependent. For instance iplayer via SkyQ runs at 1080i50

By the way, on Friday night myself and Mrs MM watched a Dan Snow documentary about the DoE on iplayer, now there's a thing!

We were planning to watch Gogglebox as an escape from it all

The BBC got it wrong on Friday. The coverage itself was excellent, Martine is probably my favourite newsreader and she was the epitome of professionalism, the wobbles in her voice was probably nerves if anything. Completely understandable. But BBC1/2/news was overkill.

There is no doubt it was an huge story, it certainly deserved wall to wall coverage on BBC1, few would begrudge that that. BBC 2 however should have been the alternative. The one show could have done a different take on the news whilst some of the shows, if appropriate, from BBC1 could have been moved to the sister channel.

To those who disagree with the complaints, particularly those who bring up the war and foreign holidays to batter those who disagree actually shows how out of touch you are.
The nation is more than capable of holding itself appropriately in the face of bad news. As a broadcaster the BBC should not have forced people to switch away from its network of channels. I say out of touch because for many posters on here, from a pres perspective, Friday was an exciting day which I’m sure many of you thoroughly enjoyed.

The country on Friday was still, by and large on lockdown, on the back of an horrendous twelve months, stuck at home. That in itself is evidence of it being the wrong decision to do what it did.

Nobody is selfish for simply wanting an alternative to rolling coverage, by the same token, just because some didn’t want to watch the coverage, doesn’t automatically mean they didn’t care about the news.

The complaints aren’t about the open ended coverage they are about that coverage simulcast on multiple BBC Channels.
I agree, as always they'll almost certainly be looking back at how it went in the coming weeks and work out what could be done better next time. The thing is that they can make all the plans and revise them and think about what it will be like when it happens.... they didn't know what it was actually going to be like on air until Friday

That said, next time will almost certainly be the big one, so will very very different. The next one probably won't just be the death of a Royal, it'll be an absolutely pivotal point in history - the end of an era and the start of something none of us who are under about 75 will have experienced.

Surely they could still air HIGNFY and The News Quiz as there are other stories they would be able to talk about.

It does seem royal docs not about the Duke will on hold until after the funeral. ITV have already replaced their doc about the Queen's Cousins.

Is it not the case that the same applies to the monarchy?

I think part of the issue is that the blanket coverage on all outlets has an implicit "stop what you are doing and start grieving, plebs" feel to it. In an era where the relevance of the monarchy to many people is quite minimal it's not surprising that people resent that.

It's also being perceived as pretty tone deaf at a time when thousands of people have died and loved ones have been unable to attend funerals due to the restrictions on numbers. For people who were already struggling because they weren't able to get that closure to their own grief, all of this can't be helping.

It's particularly incongruous when Nick Witchell is regularly pointing out in the coverage that the DoE held no official constitutional role in the he country and had expressed a wish for "no fuss" when he went.

I can’t see it being any different when the next major royal passing occurs. In fact I think it will be even “worse”. Two full days of coverage!

The BBC are never going to risk anything different. Never

We'll probably hear tomorrow about rescheduled sports events in light of the funeral.

And it was BBC Two or BBC Scotland that you started watching. In this scenario, what should the BBC do? Broadcast normal programmes with a huge caption on the screen making people aware of the news and informing them to retune to another channel for further details?

It’s a fair point but ultimately how much does the death of the Queen’s husband affect the average person? It does not, at all. The same could be said of the Queen although she is our head of state so it is more significant.

Did they take over every channel to simulcast Boris Johnson’s lockdown announcement ordering everybody to stay at home? If you’re not going to simulcast wall to walk coverage of the Prime Minister telling the everybody in the country they literally aren’t allowed to leave the house, then I don’t think the death of the royal consort should get that kind of coverage either.

And bear in mind this coverage was already toned down due to the pandemic because going in so hard when 127,000 brits have died from Covid 19 in the last year might also be tone deaf.

It seems the BBC wasn’t even pre-briefed with the news and got it (from Twitter and PA?) at the same time as everybody else. What is even its purpose?

They are certainly not going to announce such a death based on Twitter. I think someone mentioned on here the newsroom were made aware a few mins before the main statement was released. Many people are informed before the public and broadcasters are.

Lots of the news you see on news channels isn’t sourced directly by them. A lot of news stories come from Reuters etc. And then are expanded on by Sky News etc.

Indeed, I actually found that post quite insulting, can't believe how many kudos it's got.

Think it’s possible to acknowledge that the BBC did a great job, whilst also agreeing that some of the coverage was over the top.

Was driving yesterday with Radio 1 on, I quite liked how Jordan North mentioned the sombre playlist and changes to the schedule but essentially said “if this isn’t your vibe, and I completely understand if it isn’t, there’s plenty of stuff on the BBC Sounds app”. Probably the most sensible thing I’d heard all weekend.

Prince Philip has Died - iloveTV1 - 11-04-2021

Considering that the BBC channels have gone back to relative normality (they were showing entertainment and Casualty last night), but the radio are still paying chilled out music.

Prince Philip has Died - Brekkie - 11-04-2021

O/T but long thought Jordan North was one of the best at Radio 1 and he certainly deserves a regular weekday gig. Probably time to pension off Scott Mills.

Back on topic and I saw no mention yesterday of what Breakfast did - I assume they were on air and not replaced by straight news coverage from London.
