Prince Philip has Died - AJ - 10-04-2021

The BBC is doomed blah blah blah

Off the basis of yesterday, no - it isn't. Sure, it has other problems to address but yesterday's coverage ain't one of them.

Ultimately it's a state broadcaster and therefore has a responsibility to extensively cover moments of national and historic importance.

The Tory flag wavers will have lapped up a moment of nationalism on Auntie that they've been crying out for and those who say it is doomed are the same bunch wanting to defund and destroy it - so no surprises there.

Was it overkill to knock off Two and Four? Sure. It probably was. Did we miss out on anything as a result? Definitely not unless you wanted to watch things that will definitely be rescheduled or some more repeats that you can watch on iPlayer/Britbox/wherever.

Fwiw I thought they did a damn good job given the circumstances.

And if you thought yesterday was bad, then just wait until Her Majesty passes away, because you haven't seen anything yet.

It's very telling how many people, who usually insist they don't listen to or watch ANY BBC services, were suddenly up in arms the minute the BBC services that they definitely don't listen to or watch were interrupted and shut down for the day. By not being able to resist taking any opportunity to bash the BBC a hell of a lot of people accidently let slip how much it really plays a part in their day to day lives.

I've yet to see any credible suggestions of alternative ways to fund the BBC that would cover the entire gamut of services people complained about losing yesterday. The "I resent paying for something that's for everybody because it isn't tailored exclusively to me" mindset just seems incredibly selfish to me.

I'm very much in the minority here but I think it just shows how self obsessed we have become as a nation if for 1 night we can't just reflect on the 60+ years of service this man has given to the country and instead choose to watch people making fake inane comments on tv programmes (I say this as someone who has watched Gogglebox from the start). I bet these people complaining are the same ones planning a foreign holiday during a global pandemic that has killed nearly 3 million people as them not getting a holiday for 6 months is more important than protecting the rest of us from a new variant. People were so used to doing what they wanted before the pandemic that when someone says no its a massive shock but my view is if you want us to go back to near normal life in the UK then you should sacrifice a foreign holiday this year whilst much more of the world is vaccinated. Last night the BBC said NO we won't be showing our usual programmes as a mark of respect and prioritised all their resources on something that has national significance. No matter what alternative was provided somebody somewhere would have complained and it would have been all over the paper websites with clickbait articles. In short the BBC can't do right...ever.

People naturally switch to BBC 1 for big event so I have no issue with it staying on there all day and night and as others have said any programmes going out on BBC 2 or 4 would need to be screened first and during reduced staffing levels over the last year I doubt watching an episode of the repair shop for anything inappropriate was a priority and instead they focussed for 1 night on providing a core news service for those who maybe could not watch earlier in the day. I was not aware that the red button is on the same Mux as BBC 1,2 & 4 when I made my earlier comment but although the football was not shown on BBC 4 it was shown on the red button so its not like people missed out completely.

As the national broadcaster the BBC is bound by more constraints than any other channel. Everyone had the option to go do something else or watch something elsewhere and many chose to do that but complaining that an episode of EastEnders has been pushed back a few days just says everything that is wrong with people these days....its not like its not on 4 days a week 52 weeks of the year. This is once in your lifetime for most people given how long the Duke and the Queen have been around. I'm not a royalist and I roll my eyes at some of the media coverage of the royals over very minor things but on this I think the BBC got it right, however I am fully aware that most people disagree and that is what makes places like this interesting.

Very well said indeed.

I can’t believe the number of people in the country whinging about this. It was one day of blanket coverage on the BBC when something very out of the ordinary happened as a mark of respect to our Royal Family. There were plenty of other outlets available and not least the BBC iPlayer. And as has been pointed out, there were issues of sensitivity in terms of reviewing which programmes could still be shown. Much easier and safer all round to pull it all until decisions could be made. It’s all too easy for armchair complainers to argue all this should have been planned in advance. Nobody knew exactly when and how this would happen and, especially during the pandemic, the BBC should be cut some slack.

I, too, am sick to the back teeth of this “me, me, me” world we live in where people can’t do without anything they have come to expect. And don’t get me started on all the pandemic rule breakers. One thing this past year has shown me is how many utterly selfish people there are. Lord knows how they would have got through World War II. One thing I will always be grateful for is that my grandparents were from the war generation. A lot of young people now will probably never have heard their stories first hand. I will never forget the sacrifices they made and thinking about their lives helps me to keep mine firmly in perspective.

If only there were a ‘kudos’ button - couldn’t have said it better myself.

I wonder how much yesterday's coverage was influenced by covid? Did the all networks simulcast continue for longer than it otherwise might because plans were revised on the assumption that reduced staffing on-site due to covid would restrict the ability to vet and check other content for BBC Two and Four?

I do think that some people are misinterpreting the complaints about the extent of the coverage. Having extended coverage is perfectly appropriate; having it as the BBC's only output for hours on end, not so much. The BBC's role in these situations is always described as reflecting the mood of the nation, I'm not sure that was achieved yesterday.

As I said earlier, I think we got the answers to those questions yesterday. That said, remember ITV may be simulcasting the game in question, so some management of the news is quite possible.

Eurovision is going to at best get moved to the iPlayer (you may remember the BBC weren't initially going to broadcast Shine A Light last year, it would be "iPlayer only") but I imagine, as I said upthread, they'll just signpost to the EBU's YouTube feed on socials. Depends if they're allowed to run a televote on iPlayer, as that would allow them to do such a thing. It would be a PITA but at least there would still be a legal way of seeking the show out, and the Eurovision Again project showed there were a sizeable number of people willing to watch via YouTube.

It is a public service broadcaster. (Officially of course! Other positions are available.)

I thought protocol was not to air comedy programmes between the death and the funeral, or does that only apply to the BBC? I ask as ITV are premiering a new series of Johnathan Ross

The unfortunate fact there is both groups are mostly made up of the same people.

So all the BBC's really doing is trying to please people who'll never be pleased no matter what they do, and alienating much of the rest of the country.

Refers to the BBC for the Monarch only.

What's all this about "people's patience with the BBC is running thin"? I think they were going to get complaints either way.

Certainly I questioned why BBC Two and Four were both taken off, but as mentioned everything would need to be checked for suitability, and we don't know whether the current staffing levels with COVID restrictions would necessarily allow that. I mean, I wanted to watch Have I Got News for You, but no way would that have gone out even if Two and Four remained on air. It would have been reflective programming anyway.

The Queen has been on the throne for not only my entire life but my parents' entire lives, too. The Duke of Edinburgh dying is major news, whether you are a royalist or not. The iPlayer is still there, as are countless other channels.

I thought both the BBC and ITV News' coverage was exemplary, really. Nothing to really complain about. Other than that gaudy gold gradient in the family ident… Big Grin

Wouldn't have been hard to at least have an alternate slate of programmes that are known to be safe prepared in advance though.

Yes - I didn't actually see many complaints about EastEnders, Masterchef or the ITV soaps being taken off air - I think generally people understood that. Virtually all were about the BBC showing the same thing on both BBC1 and BBC2 and the farcical situation with the football on BBC4.

Thanks for locating that

I agree it’s clear she was told during the titles. She seemed quite emotional reading that intro into the Covid story, and raced through it at a great speed.

It’s also quite a talent to read obituary material off the autocue, that you are seeing for the first time, at the same time as changing your outfit, all with the knowledge that in a few minutes you are going to be the one to read *that* announcement on BBC One

All this "iPlayer" stuff is missing the point. Not everyone has access to, or can use the iPlayer. Also, I don't want to watch things like a football match at 25fps. If I did, I'd get a copy on film.
