BBC One: 2021 Rebrand - clarky - 20-10-2021

Asa post_id=49121 time= user_id=796 Wrote:The slight bubble effect used for the BBC One trails looks good and I guess is used in the new idents, so could look pretty nice when we finally see them.

Not much else I can really be enthused about though...

The logo animation on the ident doesn't work when the previous trail isn't for a programme (CBeebies, CiN, anything iPlayer etc.), it looks like we've crashed into an ident part way through.
The nations text is now so small there's barely any point them having it.
Conversely, the Subtitles text is now unnecessarily bigger.
The mix of drop shadow/no drop shadow text is a bit rubbish on the Oneness idents - I know, it's a stop-gap. May as well have ditched the location.
With both BBC One and Two trails now being bookended by a channel sting, it can be a little hard to tell what channel the preceding trail was actually for. There's a lot going on in a trail these days.
The ECP mix of left/centre/left aligned text is odd, but that's what happens when you split apart the channel logo I guess.

Fundamentally there's nothing I've seen so far to suggest they needed to change the logo, which would have saved a world of inconsistency over the coming months. I do get the logic of a gradual rollout and "see how we look in a year's time" but it would have been nice for some parts to have been updated on day one - they Reithed the BBC News titles the other year, surely they could have done the same for today.

I also like that ‘bubble effect’ there is clearly still a circular element to the presentation. Makes me hopeful for when we do finally see the new idents. I just feel that while today may be a disappointment to those expecting a Big Bang refresh, everything I’ve seen I like, and this is just the start of many many more changes if what we have been previewed comes to fruition. ? from me.

Dare I say this rebrand has improved Oneness. The way the logo is framed around the action makes the idents seem a little more complete. It helps that they've so far been using the more recent idents (Lifeguards, Wild Campers, Steel Pan Band) which at least have some nice colour schemes compared to the older ones.

I rather like the new logo... but to see it next to the old one like that is horribly jarring. That sort of thing really should be avoided wherever possible ?

You would presume now the first phase has launched all new graphics featuring the BBC logo will be using the new one from now on so it should only be a short period while these inconsistencies last.

That being said however the biggest offender in BBC News just happily sat on air with the old logo in the corner.

Hmm. Interested that the ident into the Lunchtime News (at least on NE&C) had the old branding - Oneness lettering, Gill Sans logo and all.

Makes me wonder if there's no regional variants of the new branding for Oneness.

BBC One: 2021 Rebrand - Spencer - 20-10-2021

Yorkshire had the new style ident, but with no ‘Yorkshire’ identifier on it. The announcement was regional though.

BBC One: 2021 Rebrand - Steve in Pudsey - 20-10-2021

Yorkshire used a non-regionally branded version into the One (with regional announcement)

Video version of the ECP. The animation from One to Sounds looks really nice.

I'm struggling to think of a recent TV rebrand which has been planned and executed poorer. Even Sky, who tend to gradually roll out any changes to their logo, has never felt this messy and inconsistent once the first elements of the rebrand were revealed.

As for "Project Chameleon" - they change their appearance within seconds to fit in with the surroundings. The codename certainly doesn't reflect what is going on at all - Project Tadpole might be more appropriate.

And yet 99% won't even notice the change... I do think a pinch of salt is needed here. Any rebrand involves a 'change over' period (and yes, that will, at some point, involve amnesty bins for old letterheads). The point being: there was always going to be instances where the 97 logo sat alongside the 21 logo. It's not a bad thing, or messy, or inconsistent - it's just the nature of change.

Whilst we're at it, if you think the BBC are bad at this, wait until you Tesco, the Post Office, HM Government, etc etc etc.

I completely agree with you on this point, but I think there's a big difference between some letterheads, physical signage or independently made programming still carrying the 1997 logo during a change over compared to actual in house, flagship programming and promos on day 1 featuring it prominently. Whether it was purposely done or not, the latter feels rather like a mismanaged or half baked rollout.

And you're right, the majority of the British public probably won't notice. Like I said in a previous post, it's just a shame because it takes away from what could have been a nice, smooth, cohesive new look.

Ditto in the West region

I think the biggest issue for me is that the ONE legend isn't strong enough on its own. It's in a fairly generic looking font, so when separated from the BBC part it loses impact.

I await seeing what the One show does with it with interest.

BBC One: 2021 Rebrand - Larry the Loafer - 20-10-2021

Without risking a six hour ban, I don't think the idents are any better than they were before. In the few examples I've seen, the advantages of the new logo are cancelled out by it being washed out by a bright background.

The only way I can see them improving is with a solid soundtrack. How many of us have our favourite idents in mind and instantly hum the tune? In my opinion the soundtrack and jingle is more important than what's on screen.

The junctions are a huge improvement though, nice and fluid and feeling fresh, even though they don't necessarily feel "new".

BBC One: 2021 Rebrand - Lyric W. - 20-10-2021

So apparently I'm thick in the head: I was expecting everything to change at once, despite being told several times over that it wouldn't

BBC One: 2021 Rebrand - Andrew - 20-10-2021

There is a lot of heavy lifting going on by people arguing that using two logos on the screen at the same time, and in prominent places, not just obscure services, is perfectly normal.
