XIII post_id=38358 time= user_id=894 Wrote:The TOTP repeats do well for BBC Four but the idea that the BBC will look at those and think 'we need to revive TOTP' is stretching things. Considering music specials barely do well for BBC One and Sounds like Friday Night was a flop, TOTP as occasional specials isn't going to do huge numbers.

Well, there was a time, circa 2012, when I did actually think that we were very close to getting Top of the Pops back on a regular basis. The BBC4 repeats were doing good business, they'd just discovered a load of lost footage like David Bowie doing The Jean Genie which had got in all the papers, the sixtieth anniversary of the chart was coming up and there were various things announced for that and they even announced they were going to do a live stage show under the brand. There was also those "What Next?" promos on the Beeb which featured the Pops logo as an example of a classic BBC brand. So it felt like Pops was enjoying renewed enthusiasm both inside and outside the Beeb again and I genuinely thought it might come back. But unfortunately Savile happened and it became a totally toxic brand and that was the end of it.

I still don't think you can write it off, like you can't write off any genre. Twenty years ago everyone was writing off Saturday night telly saying the old shiny floor show was dead and then Pop Idol and X Factor and Strictly happened and they were the biggest shows on TV again. So you can absolutely have a music show doing good business on TV again, if the time and the format is right. Sounds Like Friday Night probably wasn't it, but that's not to say another show couldn't do it. I wonder how much its lack of success was because people turned their nose up at it because it wasn't Top of the Pops.

The thing is, though, if you want to feature music on TV, what better format than Top of the Pops? It's certainly the simplest and most effective way anyone's found to present pop music on television. Note that this doesn't mean it has to be Top of the Pops exactly as it was in the 70s and 80s, presented by a Radio 1 DJ and including a full chart rundown so you can write it in your exercise book and it must only play records in the charts even if that means it has to go down to number 74. But the basic concept of a load of popular tunes is one that can surely be adapted for a new era. You can look at Pops in 1976, 1986, 1996 and 2006 and you can see four completely different programmes, some more successful than the others. But it's the same format, it's the execution that changes. And so if someone can come up with a way of making Top of the Pops work now, there's no reason why it wouldn't. There's no reason why it has to be like it was.

JAS84 post_id=38367 time= user_id=881 Wrote:Agreed. RSC had it's timeslot moved around constantly due to Boris's regular Coronavirus briefings, not the best way to build an audience.

Maybe, but it was also at the height of the first lockdown when daytime audiences were at their highest for many years, so plenty more people had a chance to sample it than would usually be the case, especially as it got screenings at the weekend as well. Being around the briefings was of obvious benefit as well. I've been working full-time throughout and I saw it plenty of times.
I agree entirely with this the BBC and wider audience still care about the brand like I already said they was a small outcry last year and the BBC had to rush out a press release saying that top of the pops would be on at Christmas as normal. It is a simple program and as shown when it had several spin offs on BBC Two CBBC and Play UK that it can very easily be done as a magazine type show as well. If it came back as a mixture of its original format and Top of the pops Saturday it could very easily work with BBC Three having the more chart based spin off and BBC one having live performances and one or two features with the top 10 maybe but done differently to how it was in the 2003 rebrand. It could work doing that with occasional live specials. Top of the pops 2 back ad regular BBC Two series but it all about the BBC having the nerve to do it. They is I agree definitely a space for a chart based and pop based music program though be it pops or something else and anything else is always going to get compared to pops.

Sometimes, the trouble with reboots is, they're revolution as opposed to evolution. The Krypton Factor is a good case in point. Another one that was rebooted, badly, was a regional one, in Scotland, called Superscot. It was scottish people, answering questions on Scotland. An individual quiz, with three contestants each week, it was rebooted and renamed Superscots, with three teams of two people for the final series. It never really seemed to work well as a team game, and with a new host as well, it was quietly dropped.

Not entirely sure if I have much of a case here, but I'm looking at the Wikipedia page for the reboot of Thomas & Friends (don't ask why) - and I'm not thinking "this has been a resounding success", even for a kids show.

I also dislike the art and animation but I wouldn't go so far as to say it's "menacing" and "sinister" - that's just perosonal preference though. I'd love to see what the previous series pulled ratings wise.

It does seem odd to go from 3D to 2D. An example of a cartoon being too cartooney.

Usually they'd be a break between a reboot of a kids show but I think Thomas has been running pretty much without a break, but with a couple of reboots, for well over a decade now.

I think this reboot was meant to just be Series 22, but they seem to have decided it's a big enough change (the transition from models to full CGI was rather phased) to warrant it being a separate show.

As long as the kids like it (who won't remember the previous version) surely that's all that matters.

Always found it a terribly slow and dull show myself, even at that age.

Series 25, not 22.

It's not just the animation that's changed. They got rid of Henry and Edward (the two most generic of the main six engines) in favour of a couple of female trains - hence, it's no longer faithful to the books. And production was moved from Europe to America.

What?! :o

They've completely got rid of them, ie they're not side characters either?

Per the show's Wiki Toby has also been dropped for the first time and Henry and Edward do appear though do not speak or not named - so basically uncredited extras. The reboot has also dropped the narrator and drivers and firemen. Truly a departure from the original show and probably for the best it's decoupled from the original (pardon the pun).

Debuting in November on Channel 5 (with a British cast by the looks of it) if anyone doesn't want a reminder of their childhood.

Sorry Phil, but I respectfully disagree. What made Thomas so special to me and at least three generations of kids was the simplicity of the stories and the appeal of steam engines.

A lot of parents have complained their kids REALLY don't like All Engines Go, and because Thomas has been running consistently without stop since 2002, it's naturally going to be too jarring of a shift for them, (as was BWBA when it aired in 2018.)

I just came back from a night out with one of my unimates and proudly showed him my Thomas DVD collection, we were happily discussing about S4 and 5, and how the show introduced the narrow gauge engines and stuff. My favourite episode as a kid was and still is Busy Going Backwards from S5:

A Thomas YouTuber by the name of The Unlucky Tug has done a series of video essays about the series, such as this excellent summary of what made Thomas so special in it's appeal of steam locomotives, director David Mitton was a descendant of the late Gerry Anderson, and him and series creator Britt Allcroft knew what they were doing R.I.P)

(I noticed this thread and was hoping for a discussion about All Engines Go, and sure enough, I wasn't disappointed!) Big Grin

Surely if they were going to modernise they should have dropped the steam engines for modern electric multiple units by now? Wink

The new intro is far more watchable if you mute it and play the classic theme instead. Surprising really they got away with ditching the original theme tune - most kids shows still running from our childhood have new versions of the classic theme.

From what I recall, when HiT Entertainment bought Gullane in 2002, (Gullane owned Thomas before HiT), there was a huge legal battle between HiT and Mike O'Donnell and Junior Campbell, the original composers for Thomas (the details are pretty blurry now.)

Thanks for the suggestion!! That's made it 50% more watchable - just the animation rather than the live action that's wrong now!

They ditched the original theme (in instrumental form at least) in 2007 and then the singing version was ditched in 2017 (after a speeded up remix in 2015) for the new themes. Think it says quite a bit about the updates that 33 years take 90 seconds of this video and the last 14 take two and half minutes (albeit some of the updates are improving the CGI effects).

The third theme backs up what ToasterMan was saying - clearly was intended to use the original theme but they had to use something that sounds like it (but doesn't) instead.
