That just comes across like having a pop at ITV for the sake of it not being the BBC. Especially considering both broadcasters use virtual set technology to make their environment come across as bigger.

Euro 2020 (+1) - Jackwhufc16 - 12-06-2021

I genuinely think ITV have the better set up for this tournament. Both have good studios, but I feel from the highlights show that ITV have the better set. Also think they have the most entertaining and enjoyable pundits - Keane, Neville, Hayes, etc.

I assume other broadcasters in Europe & other parts of the globe would do the same?

RTE have done that before with major tournaments where they’ve used world feed graphics.

For me the problem with RTE this time around is that the old panel, which was one of the major reasons that you’d tune to RTE, as opposed to BBC and ITV, is gone, with Liam Brady the only vestige. Now arguably it’s all about the football not the panel but RTE’s coverage just isn’t the same any more without the banter between Bill O’Herilihey (sadly RIP) John Giles, and Eamonn Dunphy that was such a major part of the coverage for thirty years. Now it’s, well, dull. (Their rugby coverage is gone the same way too sadly, and the GAA may be heading in the same direction, a bit more slowly).

Their presentation is the UEFA world feed graphics, as it has been for all tournaments since at least Euro 2008.

Well, the way it works now means that the two broadcasters faithfully take it in turns to make their picks and nobody shows the same match apart from the final, and as the last two tournaments have shown - when ITV have had semi-finals featuring the home nations exclusively - that they stick to that.

That is different to how it used to be when there was a lot of horse-trading and it would take ages to sort out and there were lots of either/ors (such as in 2006 when it ended up with the agreement that both channels would simulcast an England semi-final). But it's very much a gentleman's agreement and they're certainly not obliged to do the strict alternate picks, they do it because they think it's the right thing to do.

As has been mentioned before, in 1998 BBC Sport said to the controllers that they wanted to show all the England matches, and they should tell ITV that and say they could show them all too if they wanted - saying the audience figures and critical acclaim illustrated that was what the public wanted. But the higher-ups at the Beeb refused, because it would look anti-competitive and ITV would go crying to the papers.

Remarkable to think that the last time both channels simulcast an England match was against Brazil in 2002.

It's possible to prefer one channel's set to the other without "having a pop". I know they're both green screen and presumably around the same size, but it's how you film it, and ITV appear to have made their virtual set look much bigger than the Beeb's, and it's shot so wide that in the shots of the three pundits together they look so small you can hardly see who they are.

When Sky started using a virtual set at the ground for Super Sunday a few years back, it looked incredibly artificial, as if they weren't actually there, and there was a piece in Broadcast at the end of the season where someone from Sky said that in the early days they had to get used to the technology and it took them a few weeks to make it look a bit more natural on screen and tone some of the more artificial-looking elements down, and also it wasn't just a technology thing but also how they directed it - they said they needed time to get their heads around the fact it wasn't simply a virtual set, which has its own way of shooting, but a real set with virtual elements that had its own specific style.

So even if both channels have similar technology behind their sets, the way they direct the coverage can have an impact.

There have been other tournaments when ITV have had better-looking and more aesthetically pleasing sets than the Beeb. But this year I prefer how the Beeb are doing it

I only caught the first 5 minutes of ITV coverage last night but so far but I agree I preferred the BBC studio setup and intro. ITV might grow on me as so far we have seen a preview show and live match on the BBC and only a short highlights show on ITV. Both very similar but just think so far the BBC have done it better. Saying that there are times ITV have done the studio better off the top of my head 2002 and 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.

I live in Northern Ireland and have access during the tournaments for BBC, ITV & RTE and for years always preferred the RTE panel of Bill, Liam, Eamon & John. I would probably watch part of the match on BBC/ITV but always put on RTE at full time and don't know if I will do it much this year now they panel has all gone.

Although while I loved the RTE Football/Soccer panel I didn't like the Rugby panel mainly due to Hook & McGurk as it seemed they were just trying to be Eamon Dunphy and when RTE lost the 6 Nations I felt their coverage was the best it had been for years with Daire O'Brien, Ronan O'Gara and Shane Horgan joining.

Itv seem to have mastered the green screen, there’s no haloing around presenters edges, you can see every bristle of hair, bbcs is almost there still looks like they’ve cut the presenter out you can see a very subtle border around the presenters edges.

I don't think the ITV studio is green screen. The 2019 Rugby World Cup studio (they look like the same one) was using AR technology
to create the background behind the presenters with a real set.

For posterity/those who haven't seen it, here is the ITV intro:

And a clean version of the official intro:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_dknKLRqKA

Probably the world feed intro wins out of the ITV/BBC/World feed for me.

And the opening to ESPN's coverage, including the intro from 3' 19". No surprise the same music from previous years but a very similar style visually to the 2016 intro. Studio a bit dark is my initial reaction but nice enough I guess.

Euro 2020 (+1) - Brekkie - 12-06-2021

I'm quite fond of that ESPN theme - loved their titles for Euro 2012.

Just checked out a bit of the ITV coverage on the ITV Hub - it's quite refreshing that in these days of marketing and branding these tournaments always have "ITV Sport presents" in a fairly classic font rather than using the company branding. Of the two I think ITV win on the intro front by having the better music. Really like their team sheet graphics too, but the (official?) scorebar looks nasty.

Agree with the comments on the studio - it looks nice but feels too big and feels socially distanced, whilst I think although the BBC team are obviously socially distanced the arrangement feels much more natural. I did think the need for social distancing might see broadcasters cut back down to two pundits rather than three across the last year but that hasn't been the case at all.

Euro 2020 (+1) - Jon - 12-06-2021

I think with the ITV studio, possibly the platform, desk and screen are real but the rest virtual.

I do wonder what the original plans for the BBC set would have been considering it would have changed a bit from last year with social distancing to consider. And whether this design will be taken over to the football studio next season and used for the Olympics.

Euro 2020 (+1) - Steve in Pudsey - 12-06-2021

Looks like BBC One is taking a slightly different feed to S4C, or have access to ISOs or their own cameras to drop in. They had a particularly wobbly shot that looked like the camera framing up just before the anthems rather than anything that the camera op would have intended to go out on air while S4C was on a wide shot of the teams lining up which I assume was the world feed.

Euro 2020 (+1) - Jon - 12-06-2021

The pitch also seems to be covered in Fog again. Was there more fireworks or is it the weather in Baku? If it’s the former are we going to have this in every cities first match? You’d really have thought they’d have sorted something since last night.
