On the surface, maybe. Television being a visual medium, and Radio being sound based. But thinking about it, it actually is a bigger priority than you would initially think. Live streams from the studios are quite common, for example. Logos that appear on your car's on board entertainment when you select a new station (at least more modern cars), the info screens on Freeview when you have radio on your television.

The trouble with a lot of the radio logos that appear on car displays is they’re factory set and don’t automatically update when the broadcasters change them.

Not even with a firmware update?

Radio branding is so much more important than it was in the Lambie-Nairn 1997 rebrand. Other than some minimal television adverts, you would never see those logos. Now they are all over phones, cars and digital derives.

There are new radio logos.

TV should be prioritised but of course now you've at least got to have the logo ready for the Sounds app, the website and social media. Things like in studio branding though for visualised efforts can be changed over time. I suspect some will be ready to go quite quickly, others may take a bit longer.

Radio branding is one of the few things where the 1997 rebrand was underwhelming IMO - I'd even go as far as to say it was a failure and felt a bit like an afterthought. Arguably as a mainly audio medium where a radio station logo is used it needs to make much more of an impact and be much more identifiable than a TV logo seen on screen every half hour or so. A plain logo with just a change in background didn't achieve this, hence why they were one of the first elements to see wholesale change.

Well yes, but how many people ever bother to do that? In my experience even the main dealers don’t tend to do it unless you specifically ask them.

While we’re on radio branding as part of this widescale revamp, will this extend to jingles? I can’t remember when exactly the current BBCR2 jingles came about, but this version of the 7-note ‘theme tune’ has been around a while. Will there be new themes to accompany the new logos? Anyone know?

I’d be very surprised if they did an audio change. The sonic tune has been around for 7 years but the previous was around for much longer, and fundamentally the only reason for the change was cost-cutting rather than branding.

I firmly believe that Auntie Beeb will forever remain chronically incapable of implementing (and/or maintaining for very long) totally consistent branding across absolutely all of their outlets and services (like a commercial broadcaster such as ITV seems to easily manage to do), unless the anti-Licence Fee brigade ever get their way and the corporation is forced to actually *become* commercial themselves.

This opinion is based on... erm... observing the history BBC branding since the year dot! ?

The 1997 revamp initially managing to be totally consistent was easier, as there were far fewer services back then (only two existing TV channels. And various other things like 6 Music, Sounds, Red Button, etc etc weren't yet invented).

If it's true that there won't be a single "Day Zero" when everything changes at once (apart from the master "BBC" blocks element within each sub-brand), then what's the betting that by the time the roll-out reaches the final services to get revamped that some of the things that had got it first will start to drift?! /cynicism

It does seem with so many different departments and divisions, each after a while seems to take it upon themselves to go their own way and deviate from the corporate branding.

Regional news is a prime example where every corporate look so far has descended into a mess with certain regions deciding to do their own thing and coming up with their own variations. Even with the latest format, North West Tonight has already introduced its own closing music.

New BBC Logo - Stanley Matravers - 25-09-2021

BBC Regional News are particularly bad for "going rogue" with branding.

Think of when Look Hull introduced titles that were like a crap mock of the North West Tonight style. Or when the "Look East" name was suddenly written in Helvetica (or whatever random font it was) instead of the prescribed Gill Sans.

Really? Is there any first look at them? Big Grin

The way they promote radio lately I wouldn't be surprised if at least conversations have been had about rebranding them BBC Sounds 1, BBC Sounds 2 etc.

Does it get a refresh?. it’s not long since the July 2019 refresh

My guess is the titles will just be updated with the new BBC logo. Although I wouldn’t be disappointed to see them replaced entirely. I think they look quite cheap.
