I'm very much in the minority here but I think it just shows how self obsessed we have become as a nation if for 1 night we can't just reflect on the 60+ years of service this man has given to the country and instead choose to watch people making fake inane comments on tv programmes (I say this as someone who has watched Gogglebox from the start). I bet these people complaining are the same ones planning a foreign holiday during a global pandemic that has killed nearly 3 million people as them not getting a holiday for 6 months is more important than protecting the rest of us from a new variant. People were so used to doing what they wanted before the pandemic that when someone says no its a massive shock but my view is if you want us to go back to near normal life in the UK then you should sacrifice a foreign holiday this year whilst much more of the world is vaccinated. Last night the BBC said NO we won't be showing our usual programmes as a mark of respect and prioritised all their resources on something that has national significance. No matter what alternative was provided somebody somewhere would have complained and it would have been all over the paper websites with clickbait articles. In short the BBC can't do right...ever.

People naturally switch to BBC 1 for big event so I have no issue with it staying on there all day and night and as others have said any programmes going out on BBC 2 or 4 would need to be screened first and during reduced staffing levels over the last year I doubt watching an episode of the repair shop for anything inappropriate was a priority and instead they focussed for 1 night on providing a core news service for those who maybe could not watch earlier in the day. I was not aware that the red button is on the same Mux as BBC 1,2 & 4 when I made my earlier comment but although the football was not shown on BBC 4 it was shown on the red button so its not like people missed out completely.

As the national broadcaster the BBC is bound by more constraints than any other channel. Everyone had the option to go do something else or watch something elsewhere and many chose to do that but complaining that an episode of EastEnders has been pushed back a few days just says everything that is wrong with people these days....its not like its not on 4 days a week 52 weeks of the year. This is once in your lifetime for most people given how long the Duke and the Queen have been around. I'm not a royalist and I roll my eyes at some of the media coverage of the royals over very minor things but on this I think the BBC got it right, however I am fully aware that most people disagree and that is what makes places like this interesting.
